About this role

Position Summary

 

The Route Driver maintains responsibility for representing Sterling Technology in his/her assigned territory.  Responsibilities include driving company vehicles, often pulling a trailer, picking up colostrum from local dairies and storing the colostrum appropriately in warehouses.  The loading and unloading of colostrum is an essential function of the Route Driver.  The ability to maintain an efficient and predictable flow of scheduled pick-ups at each dairy is essential.  Continuous and effective communication with dairies, other route drivers, the Branch Manager (where applicable) and the National Procurement/Sales Manager is critical. 

 

Essential Functions

 

  1. Provide excellent customer service at all times
  2. Safely and legally drive company vehicles to and from local dairies and other assigned destinations while obeying all traffic rules and regulations
  3. Ensure company property is well maintained and in good working order; property includes trucks, trailers, freezers and warehouse
  4. Maintain an open communication line with dairies, warehouses, and the Branch Manager
  5. Maintain a positive representation of the company to customers at all times and work as a team player with other drivers
  6. Serve as the first point of visual inspection of raw colostrum as it is collected from dairies and provide appropriate feedback to the dairy and/or the National Procurement/Sales Manager
  7. Weigh out raw products and produce/submit daily weigh tickets
  8. Within established company procedures, load third-party reefer trailer with frozen raw colostrum and position product in the truck to allow for safe hauling over long distances and efficient unloading once it reaches its destination at Brookings plant
  9. Keep truck/trailer and other equipment clean and orderly (take into account company image and bio-hazard considerations)
  10. Appropriately utilize company gas/credit card
  11. Ensure required licenses/registrations are current based on state requirements (ex. Chauffer’s License in Michigan)
  12. Operate forklift, hand truck and trucks in a safe manner at all times
  13. Complete/submit logs and reports thoroughly and timely

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

The Route Driver does not hold any supervisor responsibilities. 

 

 

Qualifications

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty.  The requirements listed below are representative of these knowledge, skills, and/or abilities.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  1. Knowledge of basic dairy operations as far as picking up product is required
  2. Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills required
  3. Excellent phone, verbal and written communication skills required
  4. The ability to maintain employee and business confidentiality is required
  5. Must possess the ability to pay extreme attention to detail and use and read documents and manuals
  6. The ability to possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record is required
  7. Incumbent must have the ability to think objectively under stressful conditions 
  8. The ability to lift and carry a minimum of 70 lbs. multiple times per day is required
  9. Knowledge of approved forklift driving procedures and ability to gain certification on forklift usage is required

 

Computer Skills

 

Basic computer skills (keyboarding, internet use) are preferred.

 

Physical Demands and Efforts

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that could be expected of an employee in the performance of the essential functions of this job. Incumbent will be expected to alternate between sitting, standing, driving and walking for an entire shift.  Incumbent must be capable of communicating with others both verbally and in writing; will be expected to use hands or fingers to manipulate equipment other than a keyboard.  Will frequently be required to reach below and/or above waist level and below and/or above shoulders or head.  Light to very heavy repetitive lifting and carrying is required frequently.  Incumbent must be capable of climbing and going down stairs while carrying light to very heavy products/equipment.

 

 

Vision Requirements

 

Vision requirements include close, distance, and midrange vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus near and far frequently.     

 

 

Work Environment

 

The work environment is moderately quiet with frequent exposure to farms, dairies, and warehouses.  Incumbent should expect physical labor and frequent communication with all aspects and members of the Procurement process.
