About this role

Position Summary:

 

The Production Assistant is responsible for receiving, inspecting, and processing raw colostrum upon its arrival at the Brookings plant.  This position adheres to a production schedule as instructed and ensures a steady flow of product is maintained at all times.  Maintaining a clean and safe work environment is a primary responsibility for the Production Assistant.

 

Essential Functions

 

  1. Receive raw colostrum shipments into the facility.
  2. Conduct visual inspections of incoming trucks to ensure they are in appropriate condition for the transportation of raw colostrum.  Confirm temperature readings are within required specifications upon arrival.
  3. Unload colostrum into freezer for temporary storage, taking care to rotate product such that older product is used first.
  4. Stage colostrum pails for thawing to ensure readiness for next day’s batch.
  5. Conduct a visual and olfactory quality inspection of thawed, incoming raw colostrum and identify/reject containers that are assessed to be substandard.
  6. Pour colostrum into vat for heating and pooling of product.
  7. Clean, dry, and prepare empty pails and lids for shipment back to field employees.
  8. Take steps to ensure product loss/waste is at a minimum.
  9. Operate forklift to move product within the plant.
  10. Maintain a clean working environment at all times.
  11. Promote and comply with all safety standards of Sterling Technology to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned, such as bottling and labeling when needed.

  1. Knowledge of the production process is required
  2. Safety and sanitization knowledge is required
  3. The ability to maintain company confidentiality is required
  4. The ability to remain on task and alert at all times is required
  5. General knowledge of machines, production lines, and processing is required
  6. Previous production skills and experience preferred

 

Computer Skills

 

Specific computer program experience is not required.

 

Physical Demands and Efforts

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that could be expected of an employee in the performance of the essential functions of this job. Incumbents will be expected to alternate between standing, and walking throughout the course of an 8-10 hour shift.  Must be capable of communicating with others both verbally and in writing; will be expected to use hands or fingers to manipulate equipment other than a keyboard.  Frequently required to reach below and/or above waist level and below and/or above shoulders or head.  Frequently required to lift & carry up to 36 lbs. 

 

Vision Requirements

 

Vision requirements include close, distance, and midrange vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus near and far frequently.     

 

Work Environment

 

The work environment is moderately noisy and includes running machines, frequent interruptions and moderate traffic.  Incumbents will have extended exposure to wet, dry, humid, hot, cold, and/or hazardous conditions.  Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals may be a possibility; knowledge of how to handle these chemicals is required.  Incumbent works extensively with liquid and frozen bioactive dairy products.
