
2026 Summer Intern - Translational Medicine
Department Summary
Translational Medicine in Genentech has a vision to transform patient care through borderless, innovative, and rigorous translational science that will catalyze the development of new medicines, accelerate drug development timelines, and discover new therapeutic strategies. To fulfill our vision, we recruit talented and highly motivated scientists to develop and execute innovative biomarker and diagnostic strategies to drive clinical development through all phases of the portfolio, and conduct foundational disease-oriented translational research to maximize our scientific and clinical impact.
We are seeking a motivated and passionate intern to contribute to our translational research.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on site.
The Opportunity
Analysis and interpretation of “Omics” data generated from Cardiovascular and Metabolism (CVM) clinical trial samples, with an emphasis on untargeted metabolomics.
Deploy mass spectrometry processing pipelines (peak calling, quantification, and metabolite annotation) and developing and evaluating various quality metrics.
Collaborate with wet lab scientists to optimize in vitro specimen collection for metabolomics data acquisition.
Interpretation of disease and metabolic pathways affected by different treatments.
Communicate your findings and recommendations to technical experts and non-experts to support translational research efforts in CVM.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.
Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.
Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities.
Who You Are
Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
Must have attained a Master's Degree.
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Preferred majors: Physiology and metabolism, biochemistry, molecular biology, or computational biology.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
2+ years working extensively with metabolomics software (e.g. XCMS, MZmine, MS-DIAL) and a foundational understanding of untargeted metabolomics.
Sufficient programming experience in R or Python to analyze Omics data from designed experiments.
Experience in metabolism or biochemistry in order to interpret metabolomics data.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
