2026 Summer Intern - Discovery Oncology

Department Summary

The Department of Discovery Oncology at Genentech is seeking a highly talented and motivated summer intern to identify and characterize novel oncology targets, with the ultimate goal of developing cutting-edge cancer drugs and improving patients’ lives. The successful candidate will use a variety of biochemical and molecular and cell biological techniques to elucidate the mechanisms that underlie specific cancer dependencies. The position allows the unique opportunity to participate in basic biology research deeply embedded in drug discovery efforts, and offers valuable insight about potential research careers in drug discovery and development.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.  

The Opportunity

  • Design and execute experiments independently or in collaboration with staff scientists.

  • Interpret and communicate results in small groups or in department presentation forums.

  • Maintain accurate, detailed and timely records using an electronic notebook.

  • Participate in Genentech internship program activities and events.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:

- Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:
Cell/Molecular/Cancer Biology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Biochemistry or related disciplines. 

Required Skills: 

  • Hands-on research experience in a biochemistry/cell biology/molecular biology lab.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.

  • Experience with molecular biology and/or biochemistry laboratory techniques, such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, immunoblots, co-IPs.

  • Experience with cell-based assays, such as drug-response assays, FACS.

  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, presentation, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 
 

 The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  California is $46.00 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
