2026 Summer Intern - Discovery Immunology and Ophthalmology

Department Summary

Internship: Advanced Cellular Systems for Ophthalmology Target Validation.

We are offering an outstanding opportunity for an intern to contribute to accelerating the drug discovery process by advancing predictive human model systems. The internship position is available for a highly motivated and independent scientist to join the Brancati laboratory in the Department of Discovery Immunology and Ophthalmology at Genentech. This position will focus on developing novel human in vitro models to investigate the molecular mechanisms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Contribute to a highly innovative project and collaborate productively with researchers across departments at Genentech.

  • Design and perform cell culture experiments to contribute to new model development and characterization using molecular biology techniques, imaging, and bioengineering. 

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data to delineate the mechanisms underlying AMD biology. 

  • Present findings at group meetings and contribute to scientific discussions.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or related fields.

Required Skills: 

  • Experience with human cell culture, iPSC, or organoids.

  • Skills in molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, and state-of-the-art imaging methods, including fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, and image analysis software's.  

  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot, and design experiments to address key project questions.

  • Driven, passionate, and proactive with demonstrated ability to be highly motivated and work independently.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Experience in bioengineering or omics technologies.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $40.00-$46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
