Job Summary:

The Lead BI Developer is an expert in reporting tools as well as the process to develop clear, concise, and accurate reports and dashboards. Using expertise in various Business Intelligence software, data structures, and programming along with critical thinking and strong business relationships, the Lead BI Developer enables the organization to make data-driven decisions by converting data into dashboards and reports that are readily available and easy to interpret. The Lead BI Developer is a subject matter expert in both their assigned business areas as well as the reporting tools that are required to accomplish the work and will provide guidance and strategic vision for both. Must be highly articulate in both oral and written communications, including presentations with the ability to effectively demonstrate when and how to use the BI tools (including reports and self-service dashboards) to non-technical audiences. Lead BI Developers must exhibit diplomacy, tact, initiative, and organizational skills, as well as possess the ability to inspire trust and confidence to maintain outstanding customer relationships. Lead BI Developers mentor junior BI developers by offering project feedback, participating in code reviews, and providing training in areas of expertise.

Job Duties:

  • Independently consults with stakeholders to gather project requirements and define scope on projects of all sizes.
  • Collaborates with internal partners and organizations in the design and development of reporting solutions and routine analytic studies to support business needs.
  • Plans projects and request completion tasks.
  • Provides time and effort estimates based on requirements gathering.  Strong experience independently managing multiple projects is also required. 
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of relevant source systems needed to support primary stakeholders and proficiency with related databases/data marts within first year in role.   Must stay abreast of current industry trends and become experts with the various business intelligence software systems used at Geisinger.
  • Develops, validates, and executes complex queries. Designs and builds complex reports/dashboards.  Performs routine data analysis that answers business questions for internal customers. Interprets results, and makes recommendations to business areas based on findings.  Leads efforts when multiple analysts involved.
  • Presents analysis and reports to internal customers and stakeholders.
  • Designs and instructs others to design intuitive self-service reports/dashboards, makes modifications to dashboards as needed, and offers visualization recommendations to stakeholders based on business goals, requirements, and the intended audience.
  • Reports and helps troubleshoot data quality issues when performing data profiling, testing, or validation.

  •  May participate in and/or lead industry advisory and/or user groups.
  • Collaborative and eager to share knowledge with team members.
  • Responsible for participating in and advising strategic departmental initiatives.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities to mentor more junior analysts and aid in the development of training.


Work is typically performed in an office or remote environment. Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.   • Experience with complex SQL coding

  • Ability to independently manage stakeholder relationships/timelines for deliverables, and requirements/design discussions
  • Healthcare data knowledge (health plan data knowledge preferred)
