About the opportunity

The Australian Imaging Service (AIS) is partnering with the National Imaging Facility to create trusted and cutting edge Foundational Digital Research Infrastructure to transform how Australia does biomedical imaging research. The role will focus on implementing infrastructure for central reporting of system usage, cost attribution, and system health in AIS.

The Research DevOps Engineer will be based in the Research Technology team at the University of Sydney and will collaborate with the national AIS team and world-class researchers and digital infrastructure teams to design, build, and optimise cutting-edge infrastructure. You’ll champion DevOps best practices, drive innovation, and deliver smarter, faster solutions that power groundbreaking discoveries.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work with the national AIS team to collaborate with researchers to understand needs, resolve issues, and deliver fit-for-purpose research services

  • design and implement software solutions for national support, reporting, and financial controls  and create documentation, disaster recovery plans, and production-ready systems

  • develop and enhance research-focused systems including compute, storage, networking, and cloud technologies, ensuring reliability, security, and performance

  • provide operational support through system maintenance, change management, and fault diagnosis across complex infrastructure

  • drive innovation and continuous improvement by adopting contemporary IT practices, automation, and proposing process enhancements

  • offer strategic technical advice on next-generation data platforms and stay current with emerging technologies and best practices

  • lead by example in ICT values, knowledge sharing, and vendor collaboration to deliver technical solutions and improvements.

About you

  • Education & Certifications: Tertiary qualifications in digital technologies, engineering, or equivalent experience; certifications (in Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Linux Foundation) highly regarded

  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong ability to work in teams, liaise with stakeholders, and negotiate across multiple organisational levels; excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Adaptability & Independence: Proven ability to manage competing priorities, work flexibly, and operate independently in dynamic environments

  • Technical Expertise: Skilled in software design, analysis, and specification within research contexts; knowledge of modern research computing infrastructure

  • Cloud & Containerisation: Experience building and deploying software on Kubernetes clusters (e.g., AWS EKS, Azure AKS) with Helm and Docker

  • DevOps & Automation: Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, GitOps tools (ArgoCD, Flux), monitoring frameworks (Prometheus, Grafana), and scripting in Python

  • Research Software & Data: Hands-on experience with database management (PostgreSQL), web servers (Tomcat), APIs, and scientific workflows using Python/Java; comfortable handling research data movement and management.
