About this role

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, we may not be developing swords to fight the dark side of the Force, but our developments often sound like science fiction. That's because we are designing the technologies and processes for the future of digital production, packaging and scanner technology, and many other laser-based applications, such as 3D printing and laser fusion.

In the Data Science and Measurement Technology department, we work on digital solutions for laser-based manufacturing. We combine simulation, data analysis, and modern measurement technology to digitally map and optimize real-world processes.

The Computational Methods group develops models and simulations for laser beam sources, laser systems, and manufacturing processes. We use numerical simulation, artificial intelligence, and quantum algorithms.

We are looking for a student assistant to support us in the development, implementation, and application of simulation codes—e.g., in the areas of laser material processing, fusion research, or quantum computing. The work will be carried out on site at Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen; remote work is not planned.

Be part of change

  • Together with the team, you will work on modeling and implementing simulation code
  • As part of the further development of our software, you will test and validate existing simulations
  • You will program visualization and evaluation tools to analyze the results
  • You will document your work in a comprehensible manner

What you contribute

  • You are currently studying physics, mathematics, computer science, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering
  • You are interested in mathematical modeling of complex problems, especially in the field of laser technology
  • Ideally, you have some programming experience with Python and numerical methods—prior knowledge is helpful but not required

What we offer

👥 Team spirit: Creative and interdisciplinary working environment, highly motivated team of experts, flat hierarchies, and informal culture.
🖥 Workplace: Excellent range of machines and equipment.
💪 Involvement: Independent project work and scope for innovative ideas in applied research.
🧘 Work-life balance: Benefit from flexible working hours based on trust.
📈 Development opportunities: With us, you have the opportunity for individual development through a diverse range of training opportunities.
➕ Advantages: Opportunity to benefit from exciting corporate benefits.
🚐 Getting there: Good transport connections, parking spaces directly in front of the institute, an e-charging station, and a parking garage.

The weekly working hours are 12-20 hours and will be agreed individually during the interview.
Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for student assistants.
The position is initially limited to 12 months, but the aim is to offer longer-term employment alongside your studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.

Ready for a change? Then apply now and make a difference! Once we have received your online application, you will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt. We will then get back to you as soon as possible and let you know what happens next.
