About Fountain House

At Fountain House, we believe in the power of community to transform the lives of individuals with serious mental illness. Every day, thousands of members choose to come to Fountain House to contribute their talents, learn new skills, access opportunities, and form friendships. Members and staff operate successful employment, education, wellness programs and work as partners to perform all the functions that keep our community going. The Fountain House model has been replicated in more than 300 locations in 30 countries and 32 states and currently serves more than 100,000 people with mental illness worldwide. As originators of this approach, we provide leadership by constantly advancing the practice and by leading the conversation around mental health recovery. As a result, Fountain House has created a comprehensive Community System of Care. This includes Clubhouses in Manhattan, the Bronx, Hollywood, California and Care Management, Home and Community Based Services and a large housing program ranging from 24 hour supervised residences to scattered site supported apartments. We are committed to reducing social isolation, advocating for mental health policy change, and driving solutions that empower our members.

Your Impact

The Not Alone initiative is a key element of Fountain House’s Elder Justice strategy, reaching older adults with serious mental illness who are homebound, in long-term care, or otherwise disconnected from services. Peers and staff make regular visits to residential sites, where they provide emotional support, identify risks, and reconnect members to services.

About Fountain House

Millions of Americans living with serious mental illness are denied access to care and support in the community, and end up cycling through our streets, shelters, emergency rooms, and jails. For far too long our punitive, ineffective and costly approaches have taken away their capacity, dignity, and humanity. For more than 70 years, Fountain House has believed in people living with serious mental illness - who are our sons, daughters, mothers and fathers, friends and neighbors - and has proven that they can reach their goals and aspirations for a better life.

Fountain House works. Our members are hospitalized and experience crisis significantly less than others with serious mental illness, resulting in 21% lower Medicaid costs. Approximately 38% of our members experience homelessness or unstable housing when they arrive at Fountain House, 26% come with a history of incarceration and justice involvement, and 31% join with a substance use disorder. Our members complete their education, find paid work, and achieve health and wellness goals at significantly higher rates than people living with serious mental illness who don’t have access to our programs.
