Overview

Reports to: Administrative Director

Positions supervised: RNs, CNAs

Directs and Delegates: Licensed and Unlicensed infusion personnel

 

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of approved School of Nursing with a current North Carolina RN license or RN multi-state licensure privilege through the Nurse Licensure Compact
  • Must have at least one (1) year previous leadership experience
  • Certification in specialty area preferred
  • BSN or Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred
  • Minimum 3 years in specialty preferred

Additional Skills:

Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills required with the ability to prioritize with accuracy and efficiency. Must be highly proficient with emergency nursing clinical skills. Effective problem solving, critical thinking skills and a willingness to adapt to a changing work environment required. Must be an effective team-oriented leader, assisting and mentoring others to facilitate patient customer satisfaction. Maintains clinical and professional evidence-based competency levels as required. Must be able to identify appropriate staffing, supply, maintenance, and equipment needs as necessary within budgetary constraints.

Working Conditions: Participates in creating a safety culture by optimizing safety at all times. Able to access facility lift and transport patients, supplies and equipment. Demonstrates manual dexterity, hearing acuity, and verbal ability. Displays ability for standing for long periods of time, walking, lifting, bending and stopping for the majority of the workday. Has efficient endurance to perform tasks over long periods of time. Involves possible exposure to blood/body fluids, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases.

Psychosocial: Able to deal with frustration and stress appropriately. Remains calm under pressure.

 

Other: Able to work long and flexible hours. Ensures critical services are provided during inclement weather and disasters. The Pharmacy, Nutrition and Therapeutics Committee and Director of Pharmacy have approved access to medications and related supplies (IV fluids, needles, etc), which may or may not include access to a secure medication storage area, when such access is necessary to perform the other duties included in this job description.

Position-Specific Competencies (PSC) for the Infusion Nurse Manager:

 

  1. Leads oncology infusion services using evidence-based practice, applying critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, and supportive care.

 

  1. Ensures patient-centered oncology care, integrating physical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and age-specific needs, including symptom management, survivorship considerations, and end-of-life support.

 

  1. Oversees the safe handling, administration, and disposal of hazardous drugs, ensuring compliance with USP <800>, ONS guidelines, and organizational policies related to chemotherapy and biotherapy.

 

  1. Maintains a culture of safety and regulatory compliance, monitoring adherence to infection prevention, extravasation management, emergency response, and adverse event reporting standards.

 

  1. Provides clinical oversight and education for oncology infusion staff, ensuring staff competency in chemotherapy administration, immunotherapy management, vascular access devices, and oncology-specific emergency protocols.

 

  1. Ensures accurate, timely, and compliant documentation, including chemotherapy verification, independent double-checks, treatment plans, consents, and patient education in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

 

  1. Evaluates, coaches, and counsels staff performance, supporting professional development, chemotherapy competency validation, performance improvement, and corrective action as necessary in accordance with organizational policy.

 

  1. Promotes a healthy, resilient work environment, recognizing the emotional demands of oncology care and supporting staff well-being, engagement, retention, and teamwork.

 

  1. Monitors and improves quality outcomes, utilizing data related to medication safety, patient experience, infusion reactions, chair utilization, and throughput to drive continuous quality improvement.

 

  1. Manages operational and financial resources, including staffing, scheduling, supply utilization, and budgetary considerations, while maintaining safe nurse-to-patient ratios and workflow efficiency.

 

  1. Facilitates effective interdisciplinary communication, collaborating with oncologists, pharmacists, advanced practice providers, schedulers, and ancillary departments to ensure coordinated, timely care.

 

  1. Ensures readiness for regulatory surveys and accreditation reviews, leading policy adherence, staff preparedness, and performance improvement initiatives related to oncology infusion services.

 

  1. Advocates for patients, families, and staff, addressing concerns promptly and professionally while upholding ethical standards and organizational values.

 

  1. Represents the oncology infusion department positively, maintaining professionalism and consistency in all communications with patients, caregivers, physicians, peers, and external partners.
