Are you looking to make an impact on the physical, emotional and cultural needs of pediatric patients and their families? Join our team as a Behavioral Assistant at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital!

 

Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, we deliver a broad range of pediatric programs from surgery, imaging and neonatal and pediatric intensive care to cardiac and oncology (cancer care) services and blood and marrow and organ transplantation.

The starting base rate of pay for the Behavioral Assistant role is $22.33. Candidates with experience may be brought in at a higher rate of pay.

 

This position will be working 48 hours every two weeks on the night shift, 8 hour shifts and every other weekend.

 

The Behavioral Assistant is a member of the interdependent care team led by a designated Registered Nurse. Individuals in this role are responsible for assisting the nursing staff in maintaining a safe and healing environment in the inpatient setting. The Behavioral Assistant responds to patient needs, contributes to efficient unit operations and observes patients as delegated by, and under the supervision of, the Registered Nurse.

Monitors and maintains physical safety of patients through active involvement, observation and intervention under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse.

Participates in unit specific routines as assigned to support the care of patients including:

  • Patient accountability rounds
  • Patient searches on admission; listing and storing belongings
  • 1:1 observation of patient
  • Setting up and monitoring meals
  • Vital signs and weights
  • Monitoring visiting hours
  • Communicating needed information to patients, family members, and fellow staff
  • Performs other responsibilities as needed
  • Responds and participates in trained de-escalation techniques and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or Basic Life Support situations.
  • Transports patients, equipment and supplies.
  • Documents according to unit/policy requirements.
  • Conducts environmental safety checks observing for broken equipment, security of windows, door locks, etc.

Required

  • Education/Experience - Two year college equivalent in human services field or 2-3 years of experience with direct patient care in a behavioral health setting.
  • Certification - Basic Life Support certification

Preferred

  • Education - Associate's degree
  • Experience - 6 – 12 months experience within mental health setting preferred.
