Position Description: Energy Specialist

As an energy specialist, you will support efforts to create lasting energy efficiency impacts on Wisconsin based small businesses through Focus on Energy’s program offerings. This individual will be responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with small business customers, local contractors, and community-based organizations while acting as an account manager for individual projects. Relationship building, knowledge of the energy efficiency landscape, and effective communication skills are all key elements of the position, which requires regional travel. The successful applicant will be a self-starter and will be highly organized with good communication skills.

Successful Candidates:

  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills and can build and sustain relationships with customers.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
  • Have exceptional problem-solving skills and are dedicated to ensuring projects meet the requirements established.
  • Are skilled at handling multiple projects simultaneously while ensuring seamless execution.
  • Demonstrate expertise and experience in residential construction, utility, sales, or energy-efficiency, ideally surrounding home weatherization or HVAC.
  • Have the ability to work independently, with strong decision-making skills, using discretion when interacting with others while creatively thinking of better ways to do things.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to existing teams on recruiting small business customers for program participation, along with local contractors/trade allies for installation of relevant measures in small business projects.
  • Communicate Focus on Energy program offerings to interested parties.
  • Represent the program and Evergreen at local community-based events.
  • Conduct on-site energy audits of interested small business customers.
  • Liaise between end use customers, local utility representatives, and Focus on Energy staff.
  • Conduct tracking, reporting, and presentations as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate project tracking records to document efficiency projects and communications with the market that have been influenced, identified, and completed through energy efficiency programs.
  • Other duties and ad hoc projects assigned.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Preferred minimum 3 years’ experience in utility, weatherization, HVAC, construction, sales, and/or energy efficiency industries.
  • We always strive for high customer satisfaction, going out of the way to be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team-oriented, by building strong and positive working relationships.
  • Must be receptive to feedback and willing to learn and embrace continuous improvement.
  • High School diploma with higher education or vocational degree, certification and training specializing in sales, marketing, lighting, HVAC, construction management, energy efficiency, and/or the utility industries.
  • A college degree is not required, but candidates must demonstrate continued education in alignment with their career goals.
  • This work is largely self-driven and requires creativity and the ability to be nimble, including handling changes in workload and schedule, setting priorities, and responding quickly to short-notice requests.
  • Organizational and presentation skills are necessary.
  • Must take ownership of the work, do what is needed without being asked and follow through. This requires planning, managing time well and being available and accessible to provide solutions.

Physical Requirements:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by this position. Reasonable accommodation will be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Long periods of standing/walking on rough/uneven surfaces.

  • Speaking/hearing - provide clear, accurate communication, hear telephone and warning devices.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Moving mechanical parts (at times).
