About this role

Job Summary:
The Phlebotomy Supervisor manages and coordinates phlebotomy services within the laboratory, supervising all phlebotomists and lab assistants. This position ensures proper staffing, training, and adherence to safety and quality protocols, while acting as the primary liaison between the phlebotomy team and the Laboratory Director. The Phlebotomy Supervisor will also collect samples from patients from all ages and acuity levels, using the proper mechanics and following required collection protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and schedule phlebotomy staff, ensuring all shifts and positions are covered and adjusting assignments as needed.
-- Train new phlebotomists and lab assistants, oversee ongoing competency assessments, and ensure all certification requirements are met.
- Monitor and evaluate staff performance, conduct annual reviews, and address disciplinary issues in consultation with Human Resources.
- Implement and enforce safety, infection control, and quality assurance protocols, regularly auditing processes for compliance with regulatory standards.
- Maintain and order inventory of phlebotomy supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper functioning.
- Oversee specimen collection, processing, and send-outs, ensuring timely and accurate handling for all patient populations.
- Address escalated patient complaints and complex collection cases, providing expert intervention and support.
- Maintain accurate documentation of phlebotomy activities, including staffing logs, error rates, sick time, and turnaround times.
- Collaborate closely with the Laboratory Director on staffing, procedural, and operational issues, and communicate regularly about department needs and improvements.
- Coordinate with other laboratory scientists, nursing staff, and healthcare providers to optimize workflow and interdepartmental communication.
- Recruit, assist with interviews, and recommend candidates for phlebotomy positions; process time cards and manage personnel records.
- Ensure the phlebotomy team maintains a positive, patient-focused attitude and delivers exceptional customer service.
- Remain available for urgent issues during non-working hours as required.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Laboratory Director.



Education:
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Program
Preferred:
- N/A

Experience:
Required:
- Minimum of five years� experience in phlebotomy
- Two years of hospital experience as a phlebotomist
- At least one year of a Laboratory Information System (LIS)

Preferred:
- Beaker experience (LIS)

- Must have a certification (i.e. ASCP) in phlebotomy
