Overview:

The National Fleet Safety Manager provides a critical leadership role in company facilities with transportation personnel and assets by promoting a safe, open communication environment which fosters behaviors leading to safe, efficient daily operations and excellent customer service.

Interfaces:

This role will report to the National Fleet Systems, Safety and Compliance Manager and have responsibility for driving a culture of safety and responsibility across all PCR facilities with transportation personnel and assets. This individual will interface regularly with employees and managers within the company, as well as external vendors, suppliers and agency representatives.

Responsibilities:

Selection, Development and Talent Position Management:

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting Regional Transportation Mgrs. and Frontline Managers in developing safe work practices both on and off highway. (FMCSA/DOT)
  • Conducting routine driver audits and review analysis
  • Provide feedback for ALL safety identified behaviors to regional and frontline managers
  • Driver Staffing:
    • Work with Human Resources to develop recruiting tools for both drivers and mechanics.
    • Work with manager and HR to develop and implement standardized hiring process for drivers and mechanics to identify potential safety issues/exclude unqualified applicants.
    • Monitor all DOT and internal records and hiring standards to ensure 100% compliance.
    • Work with Regional Managers and frontline managers to develop and implement driver and mechanic training program for both new hire and on-going training.

Expectations:

  • Assist managers in developing drivers to be safe, mitigate risk, and prepare them for growth.
  • Collaborate with managers to promote safety at each facility and mitigate risk.
  • Understand the market in every region we operate and devise plans to ensure we maintain the most professional, safe, courteous drivers to serve our customers.
  • Spend 60% plus time in the field with the team.
  • Ensure that a courteous and respectful work environment is maintained at all times with facility personnel and customers.
  • Be part of the process of finding, hiring, and training safe drivers and mechanics for the transportation division.

National Business Team Member:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop key relationships with PCR Transportation Managers, H&S, and other trucking industry groups.
  • Collaborate with H&S teams across the Ergon companies to establish best oin class safety standards and processes supporting partner groups including:
    • Health & Safety
    • Operational Excellence
    • Asset maintenance
  • Responsible for developing safety standards and processes to meet goals and strategies for the Transportation Division.
  • Support all transportation terminals safety solutions through enhanced training, periodic audits (facility and equipment), and constructive feedback.
  • Stay up to date on new equipment technologies that can promote safety.

Expectations:

  • Best in class H&S performance.
  • Driver fleet that consistently rates high with customers (internal and external).
  • Work with Regional and frontline managers to strive for zero incidents and keep optimize equipment.
  • Identify reoccurring national safety issues by tracking data and offering safe resolutions.

Compliance and Health, Safety & Security (HSS):

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Health and Safety to ensure corporate training initiatives that would apply to Transport employees are implemented and executed.
  • Work with Ergon's Risk Management Group to ensure compliance with corporate requirements / insurer-required standards.
  • Collaborate with logistics to vet out and monitor third-party carriers CSA scores
  • Implement safety processes that allow Admins, Regional and Front Line Managers to maintain a safe work environment and be compliant.
  • Conduct in-person safe driver training for all transport employees
  • Be part of all incident investigations and ensure proper incident data is being captured and tracked by terminal systematically.
  • Work with Transportation Managers to develop process for video review.
  • Work with Ergon Transportation Groups and HSS to determine progressive coaching and disciplinary process for videos of unsafe behavior.
  • Utilize a safety tracking system to allow visibility of training compliance, DOT inspections, and incident to be housed, tracked, and reported on.
  • Identify, communicate, and collaborate to resolve unsafe trends
  • Ensure best in class HSS results relative to chosen metrics for the group.
  • Develop and maintain a housekeeping program.

Expectations:

  • Work with H&S to develop innovative processes for the transportation team.
  • Successfully accomplish Regional and National HSS goals.
  • Execution of Transportation group HSS strategies.
  • Ensure all safety processes related to Compliance, Health, Safety, & Security are in place and functioning properly on a national level.
  • Zero infractions of DOT standards /regulations.
  • Collaborate with other Ergon Transportation groups on best practices and new technologies to improve safety and security of the fleet.

Operations / Asset Management:

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Transportation Managers to create job safety analysis and SOPs for tasks.
  • Monitor CSA scores for the transportation division and communicate trends.
  • Monitor systems in place for proper mechanical inspections and maintenance of all power units and trailers for both mechanical integrity and applicable DOT compliance. Ensure transportation systems will talk to streamline and reduce data entry.
  • Work with Admin to monitor and address ELD compliance issues.
  • Work with various vendors to aid in safety training programs and/or presentations.
  • Work with leaders to establish safety standards for equipment in each application in the areas of:
    • Routine maintenance
    • Major maintenance / rebuilds
    • Replacement strategies
  • Work with local authorities to ensure compliance and provide on-site training as needed
  • Ensure the proper safety processes are in place to aid in controlling TOE to the lowest practical level to ensure maximum profitability for the region and proper asset integrity strategies.

    • Develop and implement safety strategies to improve fleet safety performance.
  • Utilize system capabilities to ensure we can monitor our safety service in each market.

Expectations:

  • Implementing the proper safety processes to ensure assets are maintained according to DOT standards
  • Aid in scalable equipment purchases to mitigate risk
  • System in place to monitor safe customer service
  • Work with National Fleet Manager to meet safety objectives for efficiencies and costs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field.
  • 3-5 years' experience in fleet safety management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a safety function at a national level.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills particularly with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strategic thinking with strong attention to detail.
  • Have or be willing to obtain a Certified Safety Supervisor (CSS) or Certified Director of Safety (CDS) with North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI) or its equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, as well as physical ability to maintain a consistent presence in the truck shop with service technicians.
  • Able to work inside or outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions as needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and good driving records.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Transport Worker Identification Card (TWIC), where applicable
  • Able to travel on company business as needed, including regularly attending safety conference to network and gain valuable insights for safety operations. Anticipated travel is 50%.
