Through our dynamic knowledge discovery platform, we combine graph-powered agentic AI with advanced search technologies to deliver contextually relevant, trustworthy, and precise answers to researchers.  As part of the Search team, you'll contribute to the systems and infrastructure that fuel this mission. We focus on building scalable, reliable, and high- performance retrieval systems that accelerate innovation across Elsevier’s ecosystem. 

The Role 

We are looking for a Software Engineer II to contribute to our central search engineering systems by collaborating closely with product, platform, and other engineering teams to deliver technical solutions. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Handle small to medium-sized tasks with minimal assistance needed. 

  • Begin designing components and modules pairing with more senior engineers as needed. 

  • Troubleshoot and debug issues, provide solutions, and collaborate with quality engineering and product teams. 

  • Ability to look ahead in the backlog and find issue that can be fixed, which also includes writing well-defined stories as needed. 

  • Treat all colleagues, regardless of level, role, or expertise, with respect and professionalism. 

  • Actively welcome diverse perspectives, include others in discussions, and recognize the value in different viewpoints. 

  • Communicate openly and clearly, whether discussing ideas, asking questions, or providing feedback. Be mindful of clarity and approach.

Requirements:

  • 1- 2 years of experience with backend programming languages including but limited to: Python, NodeJS, Java 

  • Knowledge of Database technologies (SQL, NOSQL) 

  • Familiarity with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP) 

  • Experience with (shared) source control (Git, GitHub, Gitlab, SVN) 

Nice to Have 

  • Search technologies (Solr, Opensearch, Elasticsearch)  

  • GenAI/RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) systems  

  • Data pipelines/batch processing  

  • Docker/ECS/Kubernetes  

  • SOLID Principles/Object Oriented Design
