The Cardiometabolic Research Division (CMR) of Eli Lilly and Company, focuses on the discovery of biologic, small molecules, and genetic therapeutics for the treatment of diabetes, obesity and associated complications.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated individual who can help build a highly collaborative, successful drug discovery team in the Insulin/Incretin Discovery research group in Indianapolis. The successful candidate will leverage their strong in vivo pharmacology background and complementary laboratory skills to play a critical role in supporting discovery efforts and established pipeline projects with an emphasis on metabolic therapeutics. You will be responsible for setting up critical capabilities in the laboratory setting and working with other scientists within and across departments to achieve project and department goals. This position will primarily involve in vivo compound testing in various rodent models of diabetes, obesity and cardio-metabolic disease. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participation in the development, optimization and validation of in vivo experiments and aid in understanding in vivo biology of target engagement.  Active involvement in multiple diabetes and obesity target teams.
  • Perform acute and chronic in vivo studies, glucose/insulin tolerance tests and glycemic clamp studies using radioactive isotopes, including animal handling, blood and biopsy collection, measurement of body weight and food intake as well as test article formulation and administration by oral and parenteral routes.
  • Analysis of data in these experiments including presentation of data in spreadsheet and graphical form with descriptive statistical analysis.
  • Perform small animal surgical procedures including, but not limited to, rodent blood vessel catheterization, telemetry implantation, and mini pump implantation.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree biology/animal science/veterinary technology or a closely related field
  • Experience in the handling of small laboratory animals
  • Flexible scheduling is a necessity. The position is full-time (40 hrs/wk), but there is a monthly requirement to work as early as 5:00 AM

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Applicant should be able to arrange, modify and organize methods for in vivo studies and modify procedures when warranted.
  • Strong relationship-building, collaboration, and communication skills within the laboratory team.
  • Experience with rodent metabolic disease models, with some knowledge of small animal surgery techniques.
  • Familiarity in the design and execution of the glycemic clamp technique.
  • Knowledge of routine in vitro skills.
  • Ability to multi-task across diverse activities.
  • Strong relationship-building and interaction skills with cross-functional teams and projects.
  • Experience working with radioisotopes, chemical, and biological hazards.
  • Additional experience in cell culture and molecular/biochemical techniques would be a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and experience presenting data in a team environment.
  • This position requires extended periods of standing and the ability to lift 30 lbs.

The position level will be commensurate with candidate’s experience.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$65,250 - $169,400

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
