OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

Responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining database architectures that support business applications and processes. Responsible for data ingestion, ETL processes, database security, and performance optimization within the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Ensures compliance with data governance policies, backup and recovery protocols, and industry regulations. Collaborates with stakeholders to provide insights, manage projects, and support data-driven decision-making. With expertise in database management and security, plays a key role in maintaining system integrity, anticipating capacity needs, and ensuring seamless database operations. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs, implements, and maintains database schemas that support our applications and business processes.
  • Manages data ingestion and ETL/ELT processes for all data related to the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Ensures backup and recovery procedures are documented, reviewed against IT security, infrastructure and compliance standards and tested.
  • Serves as the primary Major Incident Management (MIM) resource for the EDW. Monitors EDW users and conducts audits as requested.
  • Collaborates with IT Security and Compliance to ensure proper data governance guidelines are followed.
  • Monitors and optimizes database performance to ensure optimal query execution and system efficiency.
  • Implements and maintains security measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access or breaches.
  • Develops and implements backup and recovery plans to ensure the integrity and availability of our data.
  • Plans and execute database upgrades and patching to ensure that our database systems are up to date and secure.
  • Diagnoses and resolves database-related issues in a timely manner to minimize downtime and ensure the reliability of our systems.
  • Leads technical sessions and projects, representing the EDW team in managing the Microsoft Fabric environment.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of database configurations, processes, and procedures. Preferred experience in DevOps or similar.
  • Analyzes data usage trends to forecast capacity needs and support scalability planning.
  • Serves as a key EDW resource, collaborating with development and IT teams to provide insights and recommendations. Ensures that our databases comply with relevant regulations and standards, such as GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI DSS.
  • Collaborates with data scientists and analysts to support advanced analytics and data-driven decision-making.
  • Develops and maintains data models and metadata to ensure data consistency and quality.
  • Provides training and support to other team members on database management and best practices and new implementations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field or commensurate experience or equivalent work experience.
  • Certification in database administration desired (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience with Microsoft ecosystem. 3 - 5 years of experience as a Database Administrator and cloud architecture (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Google, etc.) or in a similar role.
  • Experience with Spark, PySpark, and KQL, Notebooks and Lakehouses preferred.
  • Proficiency in managing relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as T-SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle.
  • Strong SQL skills and the ability to write and optimize complex SQL queries.
  • Experience with database performance tuning and optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge of database security best practices and experience implementing security measures such as encryption, access controls, and auditing. Experience with Microsoft Purview preferred.
  • Preferred experience includes DevOps or similar environments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to maintain customer service orientation and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into business-friendly language for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Effective communicator with cross-functional teams including IT, compliance, and analytics. Ability to mentor and train team members on database management best practices and new implementations.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, exercise discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality with sensitive documentation and/or situations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a criminal record/fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation per Easterseals Southern California and/or program requirements.
