Overview

Manager, Clinical Documentation Specialists & Quality 

  • Full-Time- 40 hours per week
  • Hours: Monday-Friday; 8am-5pm
  • Location: Downers Grove, IL 
  • Travel: In office as needed.

The Manager of Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDS/Quality) is responsible for leading, developing, and overseeing a team of CDS professionals to ensure accurate, complete, and compliant clinical documentation. This role partners closely with providers, coding, quality, revenue cycle, and population health teams to support risk adjustment, quality performance, regulatory compliance, and value-based care initiatives.


Responsibilities

· Lead, coach, and manage a team of Clinical Documentation Specialists, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and professional development.

· Oversee daily CDS workflows, ensuring timely and accurate chart reviews, provider queries, and documentation follow-up.

· Ensure documentation supports accurate ICD-10 coding, HCC capture, severity of illness, risk of mortality, and quality measures.

· Collaborate with providers to improve documentation clarity, specificity, and compliance through education and feedback.

· Partner with coding, compliance, quality, and revenue cycle teams to align documentation practices with organizational goals.

· Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as query response rates, documentation improvement rates, HCC recapture, and audit outcomes.

· Ensure CDS processes comply with CMS, payer, and regulatory requirements, including audit readiness.

· Lead initiatives related to Epic tools and workflows (e.g., BPAs, chart prep, suspecting, and retrospective reviews).

· Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and provider experience.

· Support organizational initiatives related to value-based care, risk adjustment, and population health.


Qualifications

· Registered Nurse (RN), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), RHIA, RHIT, or equivalent clinical/coding credential required.

· 5+ years of experience in clinical documentation improvement, coding, or related healthcare roles.

· 2+ years of leadership or people management experience preferred.

· Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCCs, CMS risk adjustment models, and clinical documentation standards.

· Experience working in Epic EHR, including documentation, reporting, and clinical decision support tools.

· Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively engage providers and senior leaders.

· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

· Experience supporting value-based care, Medicare Advantage, ACOs, or population health programs.

· Prior experience managing CDS teams in a payer, health system, or delegated risk environment.

· Familiarity with external audits, RADV, and payer risk adjustment reviews.

 

 

The compensation for this role includes a base pay range of $99K-$149K, with the actual pay determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. Additional compensation may be available through shift differentials, bonuses, and other incentives. Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package.
