About Duke Regional Hospital

Pursue your passion for caring with Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. With 388 beds it is the second largest of Duke Health's four hospitals and offers a comprehensive range ofmedical, surgical, and diagnostic services, including orthopedics, weight-loss surgery, women's services, and heart and vascular services.


 

This is a PRN position, but the hours for this position are every other weekend (1st shift) plus one 4 hour evening shift.

 

Occupational Summary

The pharmacy internship program at Duke Regional Hospital is designed to provide the intern with health-system exposure. It is a two-year program focused on transitions of care with admission medication histories. Interns in their 3rd and 4th years of pharmacy school will provide clinical services, such as obtaining medication histories, assisting with clinical consults, and anticoagulation education. Additionally, all interns will have the opportunity to build mentorships with clinical pharmacists, give professional presentations, and conduct research and quality improvement projects.

Work Performed

Pharmacy Tech I/Pharmacy Intern

Accurately and efficiently follow workflow procedures. Conduct admission medication history interviews with patients/caregivers and confirm with outside sources (outpatient pharmacies, skilled nursing facilities, etc.) as indicated. Collaborate with immediate pharmacy team and customers alike to resolve issues, ensure accuracy, and deliver a timely resolution of any medication related concern. Assist with a variety of basic clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow up calls). Document completed work with departmental procedures. Manage individual responsibilities while supporting team members and contributing to broader team goals. Perform other related duties incidental as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculations. Proficient computer skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Requires critical thinking skills with ability to implement solutions. Excellent customer service skills including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete satisfaction. Strong organizational skills including staying focused on assigned task and using time and resources effectively andefficiently to achieve job expectations. Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, reaching, stretching, stooping, and sitting for prolonged times; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing functions ofthe job; ability to lift up to 20 lbs., while walking, stooping, bending and reaching.
