Department Profile:

 

The 7300 Cardiology Stepdown Unit at Duke University Hospital is comprised of 31 beds. Cardiology Step Down provides care for cardiology medicine patients with a range of diagnoses.  The patient population includes but is not limited to the care of acute coronary syndrome, post cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology procedures, dysrhythmias, heart failure, heart transplant workups and congenital heart disease.   These patients require high acuity care and many come directly from the ICU, post procedures or outside hospitals requiring an increased level of care.  Many times, these patients encompass a multi-system involvement which can include but is not limed to pulmonary, renal, endocrine and neurology.  The environment is fast paced, challenging and a great place to promote and develop your critical thinking skills with many opportunities for professional growth. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.

 

Work Hours & Shifts:

 

Full Time: 7am-7pm/7pm-7am 12-hour days and nights rotating shifts

  • Straight shift option available after orientation for experienced nurses based on unit availability

 

Job Summary:

 

As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere. The Clinical Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities. Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department. Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level:

  • Plan, provide and document professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in the delivery of patient care.
  • Participate in maintaining the environment of care including equipment and material resources. Prioritize work organization and identify resources available to assist in completing components of care in a timely manner.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assist in performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

 

  • Required Qualifications at this Level

    Education

     

    Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program.

    Exception: Registered nurses hired between July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within seven years of their start date. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.

     

    Experience

     

    No experience required.

    All CNIs will be enrolled in and must complete the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire.

    CNIs are required to meet criteria set forth by the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 18 months of hire to be promoted to CNII.

     

    Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

     

    Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.

 

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.
  • Professional specialty certification (preferred).
