The preferred location for this position is Plainfield, IN, however, the manager may consider other areas of Indiana or Ohio within the Duke Energy territory.
This position leads business development and project development activities for complex Energy Services projects across Duke Energy’s regulated jurisdictions, focusing on customer‑sited energy infrastructure solutions. These include backup/standby generation, resiliency systems, distributed generation, temporary/bridge power, and turnkey or Energy‑as‑a‑Service offerings. The Business Development Manager (BDM) drives opportunities from initial customer engagement through internal funding approval and transition to construction and operations partners. This role requires extensive cross‑functional collaboration and customer interaction to ensure solutions align with Energy Services’ Design–Build–Operate–Maintain–Own business model.
Responsibilities
Opportunity Development & Customer Engagement
Identify and qualify opportunities across industrial, commercial, and governmental sectors for resiliency, electrical infrastructure, temporary power, and distributed energy solutions.
Engage customers to understand operational needs and structure technical scopes aligned with Duke Energy foundational principles
Maintain strategic relationships with contractors, vendors, developers, and key stakeholders.
Project Development Execution
Develop project budgets, schedules, development plans, and capital estimates.
Partner with engineering resources to optimize design and constructability.
Structure, negotiate, and execute commercial agreements including leases, purchase options, interconnect agreements (when applicable), Engineering Procurement & Construction (EPC) agreements, and Energy Services‑specific agreements (OSG, Premier Power, turnkey power delivery, etc.).
Lead due diligence across environmental, safety, technical, financial, and regulatory domains.
Prepare and submit proposals for competitive procurement processes.
Cross‑Functional Leadership & Internal Alignment
Serve as project sponsor through internal governance
Coordinate across matrixed departments—engineering, regulatory, real estate, legal, finance, operations—to advance project milestones.
Contribute to market assessments, RFP strategy, acquisitions, and new product development.
Safety, Compliance & Operational Excellence
Integrate Energy Services Safety Plan requirements into early development activities.
Incorporate environmental compliance, permitting, and hazard awareness into project planning.
Uphold Duke Energy safety culture and support continuous safety improvement.
Leadership, Communication & Relationship Management
Communicate complex topics effectively to stakeholders, leadership, customers, and community representatives.
Influence internal teams and external partners to align and overcome project barriers.
Represent Energy Services professionally through written, verbal, and public‑facing communication.
Bachelors degree in Business, Engineering or other related degree AND six (6) years related work experience
In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) AND 6 years related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 10 year(s) related work experience
Desired Qualifications
