Job Summary

The Engineering Technologist III serves as a Lighting Photometric Designer within Duke Energy’s Outdoor Lighting group. This role is responsible for developing professional, code-compliant lighting designs for a variety of outdoor applications, including residential subdivisions, multifamily developments, commercial sites, roadways, and Department of Transportation (DOT) projects. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with creative problem-solving to produce efficient, visually appealing, and safe lighting layouts that meet both customer and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lighting Design & Photometrics: Develop detailed outdoor lighting designs and photometric calculations for new installations and system upgrades across residential, commercial, and municipal applications.
  • Technical Tools: Utilize lighting design software such as Visual, AGi32, AutoCAD or similar programs to model performance, evaluate uniformity, and ensure compliance with IES and local standards.
  • Project Development: Collaborate with Sales, Engineering, and Construction teams to translate customer requests into accurate and buildable lighting layouts.
  • Plan Preparation: Produce design drawings, fixture schedules, layout maps, and photometric reports to support proposals, permitting, and construction.
  • Standards & Compliance: Ensure all designs adhere to Duke Energy standards, Department of Transportation requirements, and applicable local codes and ordinances.
  • Customer Support: Assist with technical presentations, proposal reviews, and value-engineering solutions to optimize cost, energy efficiency, and aesthetics.
  • Quality & Accuracy: Review designs prepared by others for consistency, completeness, and technical correctness.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current on evolving lighting technologies, photometric methods, and design tools to enhance overall quality and efficiency.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies,
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance,
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,
  • Maintains accurate records and files,
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology or Engineering AND two (2) years minimum of relevant industry experience OR
  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering AND four (4) years minimum of experience OR
  • In lieu of above degrees, high school diploma/GED AND six (6) years minimum of equivalent experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in AutoCAD or Microstation
  • Experience with photometric design software (Visual, AGi32, Litepro, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of utility electrical distribution system
  • General lighting experience & familiarity with outdoor lighting products – fixtures, poles, etc., specifically in lighting design
  • Understanding of IES lighting fundamentals, light sources, light optics, luminaire performance, lighting calculations, photometry, lighting economics, and energy management.
  • Ability to read and understand architectural and electrical drawings and fixture schedules
  • 1-3 years of drafting or technical experience
  • Knowledge of local lighting ordinances and IES standards
  • Competent in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and communicate with internal and external customers about their needs.
  • Able to effectively apply basic principles of project management.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Working Conditions 

  • ​Some travel may be required
  • Virtual mobility classification- work will be performed from a remote location after the onboarding period. However, virtual employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility within Duke Energy Florida's jurisdictions.
