As a Utility Worker, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining clean, safe, and well-functioning facilities that support our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Your work keeps Duke running—and ensures that every member of our community can thrive in the spaces where they study, work, and gather. This hands-on role is essential to campus operations. You’ll support maintenance teams, respond to facility needs, and provide a variety of light maintenance and housekeeping services that keep Duke’s buildings and grounds in excellent condition.
 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Ability to understand and follow instructions, generally acquired through partial high school education.
  • Experience: None required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

What You’ll Do:

 

 

Light Maintenance & Repairs

  • Replace light bulbs, open drain lines, inspect electrical outlets for damage, and check power panels (on/off only).
  • Perform light carpentry tasks such as repairing window shades, drapes, doors, acoustical tiles, and installing bumpers or signage.
  • Assemble furniture, equipment, and other items as needed.

 

Operational & Logistics Support

  • Operate a light truck or van to move furniture, equipment, supplies, and personnel across campus.
  • Provide general support to campus groups requiring moving, setup, or light repair services.

 

Facility Cleaning & Housekeeping Assistance

  • Perform housekeeping duties when assigned, including:
    • Stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and refinishing floors
    • Cleaning walls, windows, door frames, and other assigned areas
  • Maintain clean and orderly spaces across designated buildings and facilities.

 

Communication & Issue Reporting

  • Report maintenance needs beyond scope or capability to the appropriate supervisor to ensure prompt follow-up.
  • Partner with maintenance and custodial teams to uphold Duke’s standards of safety and cleanliness.
