Senior Financial Accountant

Location – Parramatta with flexible working arrangements

Employment type – Full time, Temporary up to 24 months x 3

Salary – Grade 9/10 -$129,464 to $ 142,665 pa  plus superannuation and annual leave loading benefits

Homes NSW is a division of the Department of Communities and Justice. It brings together the housing and homelessness functions of the Department of Communities and Justice, the NSW Land and Housing Corporation, Aboriginal Housing Office and key worker housing functions from across government all under one roof.

What you’ll do

As a Senior Financial Accountant, you will be responsible for supporting the management of the Division’s statutory and financial reporting obligations.  Assist with the delivery of statutory financial statements and other matters related to the financial reporting function that accurately reflect the organisation’s true financial position. 

The role supports financial reporting, maintenance and reconciliation of the general ledger(s), capital and service concession assets management, cash flow forecasting and development and maintenance of internal and external auditor’s relationships.  The role supports and advises Financial Accounting and Reporting team on key contemporary statutory and financial reporting issues. Specifically,

• Utilise appropriate systems and processes to review, maintain and manage accounting and financial information to facilitate a robust and consistent approach to financial accounting, project accounting, fixed asset accounting and financial reporting across the Division ensuring compliance with the Department’s objectives, government policy, accounting standards and statutory requirements
• Undertake analysis and review of information to provide advice on critical issues related to the Department’s statutory and financial reporting obligations, operational accounting, and other related policy areas to generate strategic insights that support the business to optimise its financial position, protocols and internal processes.
• Support the financial accounting and reporting function to ensure a high quality of financial reporting and accounting services are delivered with strategic alignment to the Department’s and Portfolio’s organisational objectives.
• Assist in the oversight of reviewing, developing and implementing financial reporting systems including identification and mitigation of risks.
• Support and build key internal and external stakeholder relationships to facilitate commitment to strategies and programs and provide financial reporting support to allow these stakeholders to meet financial obligations and priorities.
• Support the implementation of continuous improvements in financial reporting and accounting services and processes including recommendations identified through internal and external audits.
• Provide day to day support and guidance to the Financial Accountant and Assistant Financial Accountant roles to ensure deadlines are met, finance knowledge is shared, and quality deliverables are provided.
• Lead complex financial and business improvement initiatives, applying sound professional judgement to analyse issues, develop and implement effective solutions, and deliver high-quality project outcomes that support the Finance Director and Finance Manager priorities. Partner directly with senior stakeholders to drive alignment, ensure governance compliance, and achieve agreed financial and operational objectives.

Essential Requirements for the role

• Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Business, Commerce or related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
• Professional accounting qualifications – CAANZ or CPAA or equivalent > 3years.
• Work experience in financial accounting and reporting matters; experienced in providing technical accounting advice including preparing accounting papers.
• Sound experience in managing large complex capital projects.
• Experience in SAP or other ERP systems and strong Excel and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication (both written & verbal) and strong stakeholder engagement skills.
• Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, including the latest current and future developments.
