About the team

The NSW Public Guardian can be appointed by a court or tribunal to make health and lifestyle decisions for people who are unable to make decisions on their own, or with support. These decisions may relate to where a person lives, their medical or dental treatment, health care, and access to services. The Public Guardian also supports private and enduring guardians, service providers, and the community with information and guidance.

The Public Guardian works with a range of stakeholders, including healthcare providers, legal professionals, community organisations, and families, to ensure the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable people are protected.

The NSW Public Guardian has four main units:

  • Practice and Strategy: Leads advocacy, policy work, and engagement.
  • Service Delivery: Provides guardianship services across NSW.
  • Establishment and Quality Assurance: Manages intake, triage, and education for new matters.
  • Legal: Provides legal advice and supports decision‑making.

The organisation is modernising its work through new learning models, governance improvements, updated technology, enhanced training, and preparation for future reforms, including Supported Decision Making.

About the role
