Nursery ICU

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 26-bed unit provides care to approximately 350 newborns annually. The unit consists of both private and semi-private rooms equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. This unit has an expansive interprofessional team and together make up many unit-based committees with focus on training and quality improvement initiatives. The NICU’s nurse to patient ratio is 1:2.5 and is supported by social workers, pediatric pharmacists, respiratory therapists, speech, occupational and physical therapists. We practice family centered care, and parents play an important role in the care and development of their baby.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, provides administrative and clerical assistance to support the operation of the assigned nursing unit. Collaborates with other staff and leaders in the development, management, and operation of the unit.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors incoming computerized or written orders in a timely and accurate manner. Transcribes physicians’ orders accurately. Notifies RN of STAT orders. Clarifies difficult to read orders. (20%)
  • Acts as a greeter to the unit in a manner that shows awareness of cultural and age differences. Always maintains patient confidentially. Performs all duties in relating to the public, patients, and families with customer satisfaction as a goal. Answers phones and call lights in a timely manner. Takes accurate messages and relays patient info to Nursing. (20%)
  • Activates patients in appropriate systems. Obtains medical record number and patient stickers. Prepares chart, patient bands, and appropriate paperwork. Transfer patients’ information when necessary. Ensures paperwork is submitted and exchanged. (20%)
  • Prepares discharge, transfer or demise records and completes paperwork. Ensures records are ready to send to Medical Records. Prepares and distributes Flow Sheets for required units each day. Files face sheets, lab slips, and appointments in each patient chart on required units. (20%)
  • Prepares laboratory slips, enters orders in the computer, and calls/schedules appointments according to written or verbal orders. Organizes charts. (10%)
  • Interacts in a professional manner with colleagues and the public, consistent with the mission, vision and values of Denver Health. Participates in the peer review process. (10%)


Education:

  • No High School Diploma and/or No GED


Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years clerical or customer service experience Required


Licenses:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Must have mathematical and organizational abilities.
    • Good written and oral communication skills.
    • Must be detail oriented and able to problem solve minor issues.
    • Able to work in and around a busy surgical setting.
    • Ability to read and follow written instructions and to write brief notes about activities performed during the shift.
    • Ability to cover more than one unit.
    • Microsoft Office Suite required
