Job Summary

The Pharmacy Intern II, under the supervision of a pharmacist, learns and practices the basic operational and clinical skills required to be a licensed pharmacist. Based on area of assignment, roles and responsibilities may vary within the scope of pharmacy practice. The pharmacy intern performs pharmacy-related functions to ensure the safe and effective use of medications at Denver Health.

Essential Functions:
  • Fills and delivers medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Compounds medications for outpatient sales and/or delivery to patient care areas. Handles and triages telephone/window inquiries. Ensures adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care. Coordinates insurance billing including third party prescriptions if/when in the retail setting. Uses appropriate systems for processing of patient information. Triages and escalates any questions or issues outside the pharmacy intern’s scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed. (80%)
  • Develops leadership skills. Assists in operational projects. Collaborates with pharmacy leadership, peers, nurses, and providers to improve patient outcomes. Ensures quality assurance is maintained according to departmental and legal requirements. (15%)
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, huddles, and departmental trainings as applicable. (5%)

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED active enrollment in an accredited school of pharmacy Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:
    • PHARMIN-Pharmacy Intern - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
    • PBID-Pharmacy Based Immunization Delivery - BPS - Board of Pharmacy Specialties Required
    • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures.
    • Mathematical computation skills.
    • Organization and communication skills.
    • Ability to work as a team member with attention to detail.
    • Computer skills and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
