Job Summary

Under immediate supervision of the RN, the Urgent Care Technician provides patient care in accordance with treatment plans, performs tasks as delegated by the RN and other licensed members of the care team, communicates changes in patient condition to the care team. Also responsible for the collection of comprehensive demographic and insurance information required for facilitating timely and accurate billing of urgent care patients in a fast‐paced, dynamic and demanding environment.

Essential Functions:
  • Obtains vital signs, reports abnormal findings to the care team. (10%)
  • With demonstrated competency, performs phlebotomy and IV insertion as delegated by the care team. (10%)
  • Transports low‐risk patients to and from other departments. (10%)
  • Maximizes efficient flow through the department. (10%)
  • Documents all care given while adhering to the DH EHR policies. (10%)
  • Performs delegated tasks in accordance with DH Clinical Care Guidelines, State rules, and scope of practice. (5%)
  • Works to properly identify patients to increase clean claims and minimize errors associated with misidentification. (5%)
  • Collects co‐payment, point‐of‐service payment, deposits, and other payments, issue receipts and balance cash drawers. (5%)
  • Completes documentation for uninsured patients seeking emergency care, to include CICP and Emergency Medicaid. (5%)
  • Coordinate bed assignment, transfers, and discharges through various applications and maintain communications with inpatient nursing units and nursing supervisors. (5%)
  • Verifies and updates patient demographics information and billing insurance information for new and existing patients. (5%)
  • Calls insurance companies for treatment authorization and benefit information. (5%)
  • Answers telephone inquiries, screens calls, routes calls and takes messages. (5%)
  • Disseminated direct admit information to other Patient Access personnel for proper screening and insurance verification. (5%)
  • Maintain quality assurance scores of 98% or higher in conjunction with department expectations. (5%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Completion of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician program such as Emergency Medical Technician with IV authorization (EMT-IV), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), or Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I) Required or
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program with certificate of completion, including completion of a 160-hour externship or 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting. Additional training to include IV certification. Required

Work Experience:
  • less than 1 year Entry level

Licenses:
  • IVCERTIV-Intravenous Certification IV - NAPNES - National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Urgent vs Emergent Care.
  • Familiarity with medical equipment and instruments necessary to deliver patient care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, team mates, physicians and the public.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, ensures confidentiality of patient information.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience, express or exchange ideas by verbal communications
  • Ability to prioritize and perform a multitude of duties in a fast‐paced, demanding environment.
  • Ability to promote positive customer service in a high‐demand/high‐volume environment, in every encounter.
  • Ability to use critical analytical thinking skills to identify and solve problems.
  • Excellent telephone skills, critical analytical/investigative thinking skills, with an emphasis on exceptional customer service.
