About this role

Position Summary:

The Actuary will be a key individual contributor within the Actuarial Services department, responsible for analytical leadership across pricing, reserving, forecasting, reporting, and provider network evaluation. This role is designed for an experienced actuarial professional (ideally ASA or near‑ASA) with strong technical skills, creativity, and the potential to assume future leadership responsibilities.

Location:

Candidates located more than 1 hour outside of our corporate office in Roanoke, VA and residing in the following states may be considered for remote work: FL, GA, ID, MD, NC, NE, SC, TN, VA, WI, WV

Essential Functions:

  • Pricing & Underwriting Support
    • Develop, maintain, and refine pricing models for dental and vision products.
    • Support experience analyses, trend studies, rating structures, and profitability assessments.
    • Support rate filings and coordinate with compliance. 
  • Reserving, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
    • Contribute to monthly IBNR estimation and reserve validation.
    • Support development of financial forecasts and long‑range projections.
  • Provider Network Analysis
    • Evaluate provider network performance, fee schedules, discounts, and competitiveness.
  • Data, Technology & Innovation
    • Query multiple database environments using SQL.
    • Support design/testing of DDVA’s actuarial data warehouse.
    • Build dashboards and automated reports using Power BI.
    • Use Python/R for modeling and automation.
    • Use LLMs to enhance productivity and innovation.
  • Collaboration, Communication & Leadership Potential
    • Partner with Underwriting, IT, Sales, Marketing, Finance, and Network teams.
    • Communicate complex findings clearly for technical and nontechnical audiences.
    • Mentor early‑career staff and support skill development across the team.
    • Provide cross‑training and knowledge transfer to ensure workflow continuity.
    • Prior experience mentoring, onboarding, or leading staff is highly desirable.

Qualifications/Education/Experience:

  • Required
    • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field.
    • 4-7 years actuarial or analytical experience.
    • ASA or near‑ASA.
    • Strong skills in Excel and SQL.
  • Preferred
    • Dental/vision experience.
    • Experience with Python/R, Power BI/Tableau/Qlik.
    • Familiarity with rate filings and ACA requirements.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will be required to travel (sometimes long distances) to attend required meetings.
  • Work environment: The work is limited to the office environment with occasional trips to other office facilities or locations necessitating walking outdoors or driving. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
