The General Internal Medicine (GIM) Clinic provides preventative, acute and chronic care to all adults, 18 years and older. The GIM Clinic is a fast-paced clinic, with over 26,000 visits annually. The General Internal Medicine team is a growing team with highly sought-after clinicians and care team members to support all patients needs. This care team consists of a professional community, working to ensure patient care needs are met: Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers, Medical Assistants (MA), Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNA), Diabetic Educator, Behavioral Health Clinicians, Dietitian, and Secretaries. The leadership team is very much relationship based, and promotes teamwork, collaboration, effective communication, safe and quality patient care, and a positive environment for all staff and patients. Together this team strongly encourages staff to work at the top of their license scope, providing personal connection and promoting continuity of care to patients and their loved ones. The clinic provides comprehensive care to patients while open Monday through Friday 0800-1700. This allows for the team to have consistency with their schedule, promote a positive work/life balance, and maximize their time outside of work as well.

 

The role of the Medical Assistant (MA) in the General Internal Medicine Clinic is vital to the care of our patients. The primary responsibility of the MA is assisting patients with their clinician visits – this means obtaining vital signs, reviewing medication, point of care testing (ear lavage, EKG, urine dip testing, urine pregnancy testing, bladder scanning, and many more), medication/vaccination injections, assisting the clinician with procedures in clinic as well as the keeping up with the general functions of the clinic such as cleaning, stocking supplies and quality and safety reviews. Responsibilities

  • Greets, checks in patients, and notifies appropriate provider. Prepares patient, room and equipment for procedures and exams.
  • Takes and records vital signs. Informs provider of patient vital signs and concerns.
  • Recognizes and treats emergency patients as a priority, assists with patient examinations and treatments.
  • Handles patient situations over the phone, schedules appointments and procedures with medical professionals. Understands limitations in dealing with patients over the phone, and involves nursing staff and providers.
  • Register new patients and establishes a medical record.
  • Prepares patient billings.
  • Assists patients by filling out insurance and other forms.
  • Supplies authorized information upon request by third party payors.
  • Instructs patients in preparation for specific procedures.
  • Collects and processes routine laboratory specimen.
  • Operates and maintains clinical equipment.
  • Maintains and uses aseptic technique including sterilization, disinfection and disposal of contaminated material.
  • Cleans, wraps and autoclaves instruments. Cares for supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program required.
    • Previous experience in office or outpatient ambulatory care setting strongly preferred.
    • Demonstrated strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work well as a member of a team.
    • Computer skills strongly preferred.
    • Must be willing and able to participate in evening, weekend, and holiday coverage according to needs of the department.

    Required Licensure/Certifications

    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Association of Medical Assistants OR Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Medical Technologists OR Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareers Association plus DOL Registered Apprenticeships Certificate of Completion.
    • Current BLS certification required.
