About this role

The Mastectomy and Compression Fitter performs specialty fittings and provides durable medical equipment (DME) items as medically necessary and directed by a physician order. The fitter holds a customer service-oriented position that involves working directly with patients in a professional clinical capacity. The role assesses patient status pre- or post-surgical intervention and conducts product selection, as well as fitting patients for bras, compression garments and prostheses. Will be responsible for assisting with determining the right product and size for the patient. Places custom orders from manufacturers, suppliers, with knowledge of the product comfort and fit. Works with patients, patient families and revenue cycle to process prior authorizations from insurance companies and prescription from providers as needed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides image consulting services for Cancer patients to include patient consultation and patient education.
  • Provides initial patient consultation and development of individualized appearance plan post-surgery.  Identifies resources to assist client with appearance normalization.
  • Direct on-hands contact with patients, taking measurements for Mastectomy and /or Lymphedema products. Ensures a proper fit for each patient.
  • Provides patient education and services for different scenarios and activities such as swim wear, suggestions to help achieve symmetry and garments to help treat Lymphedema.
  • Direct on-hands contact with patients.
  • Measures by hand or by scanning patient correctly for specific limb/and or body part, for OTC or custom garments.
  • Completes orders on supplier portals with measurements for custom order.
  • Chooses the best therapeutic compression garment; evaluates the best therapeutic path based on a variety of factors including age, mobility, size and shape of your limb, skin or wound-related issues and cost. Ensures a proper fit for each patient.
  • Secures written orders for ALL DME items.
  • Collaborates with Occupational therapists within DFCI and throughout community for their patient orders. 
  • Prepares and ensures all necessary documentations for patient orders are completed. Documents visits and follows-up with clinical care team as necessary.
  •  Coordinates incoming requests for patients orders via e-mails/faxes and Epic In-Basket messages; takes ownership and responds appropriately to all messages.
  • Maintains current knowledge and expertise in applicable DME codes for insurable goods.
  • Practices in accordance with accreditation standards for Mastectomy Fitter and CMF certification.  Completes continuing education on Compression & Mastectomy for patients and other staff.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and obtains pre-authorizations as appropriate.
  • Effectively shares knowledge of Lymphedema and other compression therapy products with customers and uses that knowledge when ordering specialty products.
  • Assists with the coordination of the activities and operations of Friends’ Place.
  • Maintains DME merchandise inventory.
  • Covers the front desk and processes transactions when needed; provides customer service and daily operations.
  • Facilitates product sales. Comprehensive assessment of outpatient clients for garment, over- the-counter (OTC) or custom.  Planning and implementing proper garments to reduce pain, restore function, prevent permanent disability, and restore independence, using various treatment techniques.
  • Assists with the coordination of the activities and operations of Friends’ Place. Maintains on site inventory and samples for sizing. 
  • Actively promotes Friends’ Place to internal and external physicians, staff, and patients to create awareness of services. Participates in providing support programs for such issues as compression therapy.
  • Ensures safe and clean environment and maintains equipment and supplies while adhering to all hospital and departmental infection control procedures.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred. High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certification or ability to obtain certification from accredited agency (BOC or ABC) within first nine months for Mastectomy Fitter 
  • Previous experiences as professional massage therapist preferred. 
  • Physical therapy/Occupational Therapy setting experience as aide or assistant preferred.
  • Previous retail and customer/patient service experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Previous work with insurance plans preferred.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of Mastectomy and Compression garment fitting.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate patients’ condition, capabilities, and progress to develop appropriate treatment programs.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and POS Systems
  • Knowledgeable of supplier’s products and measuring requirements.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and customer service skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work with a variety of people, and make patients feel educated, comfortable, and confident in their care.
  • Ability to adapt to and embrace change.
  • Ability to function as an integral member of a team.
  • Ability to multitask, while being attentive to customers and patients.

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.

For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
