Detroit Diesel Manufacturing Engineer with main focus on machining process, equipment development, and support of existing machining lines

Position offers a starting salary range of $90,000 – $115,000 USD

Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What You Drive at DTNA

  • Responsible for planning sub systems and contributing to complex projects which could include: researching vendors, creating / assisting with technical specifications, requesting quotations, selecting vendors, creating timelines, issuing purchase requisitions (coordinate with Purchasing), scheduling tryouts, assisting in the qualification, installations, and approving of equipment/tooling for projects, and etc.

  • Understand and assist in leading the design and development of systems and continuous improvements

  • Able to apply process and standards to a project with some guidance

  • Responsible for funding planning and tracking of projects based on Daimler standard project funding principles (CAPEX, NRE, EA1, EA2, and OP)

  • Manage / assist in adopting spending plans as needed to meet cost targets

  • Able to identify shortfalls in projects or tasks and independently develop counter-measures.  Assist in proper resolutions and implementation.

  • Able to apply project management tools for your project / task.

  • With some guidance, provide engineering support and project management in integrating equipment, systems, materials, facilities, and processes into a cohesive, cost efficient and production manufacturing system.

  • With some guidance is able to promote continuous improvements and implement in projects

  • Understand product design changes and those impacts to the production process.  Assist in suggesting and implementing product or process design modifications, where applicable and make process, tooling, fixtures, or assembly recommendations, including budget estimates as part of the review process.

  • Schedule time according to established job priorities. Monitor work progress and resolves problems in order to ensure timely completion of projects.

  • Effectively work with hourly and skilled trades union workers

  • Must be able to provide management with regular reports / presentations on project work plans and status for information and resource management purposes. 

  • Must be able to professionally represent ME and actively participate in CVDS and PPR projects.

  • Must have regular communication and collaboration with the global ME team.

  • Has the ability lead him / herself.

  • Ensure engineering practices comply with government regulations and safety standards.

  • Perform special projects

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • BS/BA in Mechanical engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering

  • 2-4 years of related experience

  • 6 years of related experience in lieu of degree

    • Experience reading technical drawings and check for information required

    • Must be able to travel, including international

    • Must be able to articulate technical information in written and oral communication

    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office

    • Knowledge of automated production lines, and understanding of the controls and automation technologies within.

    • With assistance, if needed, able to provide layout, tooling, methods and material handling technical solutions to assembly issues.

    • With assistance, if needed, provide technical support to assembly process, including automatic machines.

    • With assistance, if needed, must be able to oversee activities of tradesmen and/or contractors.

    • With assistance, if needed, must be able to provide technical support to Operations, Maintenance and other functional groups on request.

    • Knowledge of process documentation and how it is used - MCP, SWI, PFMEA, etc.

    • Knowledge of standard hand tools

    • Knowledge with AutoCAD / 3D Systems

    • Understanding statistical practices and use in manufacturing

    • Knowledge of standard hand and auto gaging

    • Knowledge of cutting tool design and functionality

    • Understanding of machining processes

    • Knowledge of CNC programming

    • Knowledge of machining powertrain components

    • With assistance, implement tooling changes due to product changes

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

  • Project management or supervisory experience
  • Knowledge or understanding of axles, transmissions, and engine components

  • Knowledge of Lean System Principles. 

  • Global project experience

  • Knowledge of ANSI, ISO, and DIN standards

  • Knowledge with process modifications, improvements, and waste elimination

  • Assist in the recommendations of new line concepts

  • Ability to identify basic problems and procedural irregularities, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • With assistance, organize shop floor management meetings

  • Assist the supervisor and operators as needed with any other process related issues
