About this role

Power Electronics Engineer, Principle

We are looking for a Power Electronics Engineer to join our Shelby team!

As our Power Electronics Engineer you will lead the design, development, and
qualification of Curtiss-Wright’s Aerospace Actuation Group’s products throughout the life cycle from proposal to sustainment.  You will apply principles and techniques of power systems and electronics engineering to fulfill product requirements, and address internal customer (program management, product support, manufacturing, quality, etc.) requests/inquiries as needed within the aerospace industry.  Creativity and latitude is expected to resolve problems of diverse scope while being detail oriented.

Location: Shelby, NC

Salary: $131,00 to $189,200 + bonus opportunity

Your Challenge

  • Utilize understanding of aerospace electronics design process including
    requirements development and validation, preliminary design, peer reviews,
    detailed design, test plan generation, integration, and test to develop and
    sustain/maintain aerospace-grade:
    • power electronics/converters
    • custom magnetics (inductors, chokes, transformers)
    • isolated power supplies
    • AC-to-DC conversion/rectification
    • DC-to-AC conversion/inversion
  • Technically lead and mentor less-experienced engineers.
  • Exercise knowledge in specific analog areas of experience including, but not
    limited to, op-amps, comparators, passive and active filters, BJTs/FETs, and
    other novel application specific circuits.
  • Exercise knowledge in specific digital areas of experience including, but not
    limited to, logic ICs, state machines, memory technologies, microprocessors, and digital communication protocols (ARINC-429, ARINC-664/AFDX, CAN, I²C, SPI, USB, RS-232, RS-485, and others as needed).
  • Exercise subject matter expert level knowledge of power and energy
    conservation.
  • Utilize industry experience to identify preferred partners/suppliers/vendors.
  • Appreciate the need for and implementation of a rigorously created and
    maintained component library.
  • Appreciate the need for and implementation of clean/legible circuit schematics used to create printed wiring boards (PWB) and assemblies (PWA) using Altium within boundaries of internal processes/procedures.
  • Model and simulate analog and digital circuits using simulation tools such as, but not limited to, MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Power Sim (PSIM), and other similar software tools.
  • Verify intended operation and performance of prototypes and other hardware in a lab environment.
  • Generate high quality specifications, reports, publications, and support
    proposals.
  • Ensure electromagnetic compliance to MIL standards MIL-STD-461/464, MIL-
    STD-704, MIL-STD-810 and/or commercial standard DO-160.
    • Compliance to major airframe suppliers requirements when applicable
  • Work with mechanical engineering to ensure compliance to MIL-STD-810 and/or DO-160. Compliance to major airframe suppliers requirements when applicable
  • Designing per RTCA guidance to meet applicable DAL certification objectives for hardware (DO-254) and software (DO-178) experience with SAE’s ARP4754 and ARP4761 is considered a bonus skillset.
  • Experience with pre-contract customer discussions, briefing technical
    capabilities, conducting in-person trade study discussions, including schedule
    and cost impacts and shaping technical requirements.
  • Review vendor experience and capability to support product development.

What You Bring

  • Due to the nature of work performed in this role, applicants must be a US citizen. Security clearance is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, with 20+ years of
    relevant power electronics experience.  Masters and PhD education level are a
    plus.
  • Experience in the development of aerospace actuators and motor controllers is a plus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with knowledge of MS Office.
  • Refined soft skills required for coaching/mentoring.
  • Excellent analysis and decision-making skills.
  • Strong customer interface capabilities and negotiation skills.
  • Project Management experience. 
  • Familiarity in root cause and corrective action methodologies.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of internal and external management.
  • Creativity, innovation, and commitment to excellence with the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
