About this role

Job Summary

The Machinist – Level I is an entry-level skilled trade’s role within a formal apprenticeship or skilled trades training program. Under direct guidance, this position supports site machinists by learning and developing foundational tool room and machining skills in a manufacturing environment. The role emphasizes safe work practices, completion of required technical training and on-the-job learning hours, and supporting machining, equipment maintenance, and continuous improvement activities.

 

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

  • Stop work and immediately report major injury hazards, unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses.
  • Report all work-related injuries, illnesses, hazards, and environmental incidents.
  • Comply with Cummins HSE standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and promote an interdependent safety culture.
  • Correct hazards within individual control and capability and recognize environmental impacts of work activities.
  • Participate in mandatory HSE training and safety improvement initiatives.

Quality

  • Learn and apply high standards of workmanship and craftsmanship.
  • Perform supervised work using diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and specifications.
  • Use appropriate tools, measuring, and testing instruments under guidance.
  • Support equipment uptime and assist with downtime and failure analysis.
  • Provide feedback into the Preventive Maintenance system.
  • Follow all process documentation and quality procedures.
  • Perform quality inspections and raise issues to minimize cost, safety, and quality risks.

Delivery & Operations

  • Attend required classes to develop basic tool room and machining skills to qualify as a Machinist.
  • Complete all required on-the-job training hours as part of the apprenticeship program.
  • Assist in repairing and maintaining manufacturing equipment within assigned capabilities.
  • Support preventive, corrective, emergency, and predictive maintenance activities.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including routine housekeeping and machine cleaning.
  • Identify and help reduce manufacturing constraints.
  • Participate in problem-solving, process improvement, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Teamwork & Development

  • Communicate effectively with assigned teams and support functions.
  • Complete training and personal development aligned with business requirements.
  • Participate actively in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) teams to improve safety, quality, process flow, material flow, and employee development.
