About this role

The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea is actively seeking a new Nurse Practitioner to join their team. 

The state operated MVH at Chelsea is an independent state agency consisting of long-term care and a domiciliary which are independent living quarters for our veterans. The care and services provided by the Veterans Homes are supported by an extraordinary group of staff working to meet the needs of our veterans.  As the Nurse Practitioner, you will provide general medical care and treatment to assigned residents in coordination with a physician and provide this care in the Nursing Facility and Dormitory at the Massachusetts Veterans Home at Chelsea. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Diagnoses and/or treats common illnesses by: screening residents and referring, as appropriate, to consultants and/or specialists; ordering appropriate diagnostic procedures, such as, laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms; and by determining the type of medication and dosage needed to treat health conditions according to standard medical practice.
  • Develops initial and ongoing resident histories through interviews and by recording health, social and other pertinent data.
  • Develops treatment plans for assigned residents, including immunization.
  • Initiates treatment in an emergency situation in coordination with care team.
  • Works with interdisciplinary team care team in providing primary care to assigned residents.
  • Records and evaluates resident data in progress notes as well as annual history and physical assessments, in order to make appropriate medical recommendations.
  • Counsels residents, family and staff on resident medical issues.
  • Confers with physicians when appropriate to review the residents’ medical conditions and their treatments.
  • Contacts personnel at other institutions or medical facilities, for various services such as tests, consultations and referrals.
  • Maintains current knowledge of nursing practitioner practices by attending conferences, in service training, and continuing education programs.
  • Provides daytime coverage for other clinicians as needed to provide comprehensive clinical care during other the absence of other clinicians.
  • Provides overnight and weekend coverage in accordance with the call schedule.
  • Completes and submits billing for encounters in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Understands and adheres to professional and ethical standards.
  • Participates in process improvement to ensure compliance with current standards.
  • Provides medical care in accordance with regulatory standards and guidelines. 
  • Maintains a current, valid Massachusetts nurse practitioner license with appropriate Massachusetts and DEA controlled substance registrations. 

Qualifications Required at Hire: 

  • Knowledge of disease processes pertinent to the residents of the Veterans’ Home.
  • Knowledge of clinical pharmacology, including drug interactions and side effects.
  • Knowledge of the types of diagnostic testing and their indications.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing.
  • Knowledge of the standard nursing methods and techniques.
  • Ability to perform medical histories and physical examinations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, including rehabilitation and social services.
  • Ability to counsel residents and families.
  • Ability to analyze medical data, draw appropriate conclusions, and make recommendations accordingly.
  • Ability to gather information by observation, interview, and examination of records.

Qualifications Acquired on Job: 

  • Knowledge of the pertinent policies, procedures, and specification governing Veterans Home.
  • Knowledge of latest methods of evaluation and treatment acquired through clinical experience, review of cases with the clinical team and continuing education activities.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:  Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. 

 

Substitutions: 

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.* 

 

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. 

 

Special Requirements:  

 

Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.  Current and valid authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
