Position Summary
A Brown Treesnake (BTS) Technician Internship opportunity is available with Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) and duty-stationed on Guam in compliance with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Mariana Islands Training and Testing Biological Opinion of 2015 and the Navy-funded Project Statement of Work that implement regional biosecurity measures to prevent introduction and promote control and management of invasive species. Remote work is not allowed for this position.
The BTS Technician Intern will support the CEMML-Guam invasive species program through various BTS management tasks on military lands in Guam. This internship will work closely with the CEMML BTS Biologist.
There may be opportunities to assist with other invasive species related tasks as needed.
This position is duty stationed at the CEMML Joint Region Marianas (JRM) Area of Responsibility (AOR) Biosecurity Program office in Asan, Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines. Joint Region Marianas (JRM) was established in 2009 as the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force on Guam combined headquarters. While the Navy has numerous environmental protection programs in the region, a comprehensive biosecurity program to ensure protection of native plants and animals is a top priority.

Brief Work Unit Description
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Essential Job Duties (5 maximum)
Prepare, service, and maintain toxicant bait tubes for BTS interdiction.
Conduct In-Cave night surveys and capture of BTS.
Collect morphometric data and conduct necropsy on captured BTS.
Record and proof field data using smartphones/tablets and GPS devices.
Operate gas/electric-powered and hand tools for vegetation control and trail maintenance.

Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Must be willing to submit for NACI background check to obtain a DoD Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) card.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to work in-person at the Asan office, Guam.
Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
At least 24 credit hours working towards a degree in Biology or a related field.
Experience conducting field work and accurately recording, entering and proofing data.
Experience operating smartphone/tablet data collection applications and GPS devices.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work during nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must be capable of walking several consecutive miles carrying gear of up to 30 pounds and performing light manual labor in a hot tropical environment, often windy/rainy and on uneven terrain. Work is often conducted on hot, paved surfaces with little shade provided.

Preferred Qualifications
At least 6 months of professional work experience in invasive species management, agriculture or other natural resources management.
Experience conducting invasive species management using mechanical, chemical, cultural or biological control methods.
Snake survey, capture and handling experience.
Experience operating gas/electric power and hand tools for vegetation management.
Experience working on military lands.
Salary Range
17.00 to 25.00/hour, commensurate with experience.Required Application Documents
