YOUR ROLE : 

 

The CMA CGM Group is seeking a Group Sanctions Counsel to join the Economic Sanctions team, responsible for ensuring that the Group’s activities comply with applicable international regulations relating to economic sanctions, export controls, and international law. Reporting to the Head of Economic Sanctions, you will contribute to the implementation of appropriate procedures and controls to ensure that the Group’s transactions and projects comply with applicable economic sanctions regimes.

 

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? 

 

Implementation of the Economic Sanctions Compliance Program

  • Implement the CMA CGM Group’s economic sanctions compliance program and contribute to its ongoing development and updates.

  • Support operational and commercial teams by providing legal analysis and recommendations on ad hoc transport operations, projects, or long-term contracts. Review sanctions compliance clauses and secure decisions relating to sensitive operations by verifying all elements of the transaction (customers, vessels, ports, cargoes, payments, etc.).

  • Manage and structure the Group’s compliance with national sanctions and/or export control regimes (in particular EAR/ITAR) by assessing goods classifications and determining the necessary authorizations from the perspective of a maritime carrier’s activities.

Monitoring and Analysis

  • Analyze, monitor, and implement international sanctions issued by the European Union, the United States (BIS, OFAC), the United Kingdom, the United Nations, and other applicable national regimes. Maintain active legal and regulatory monitoring of geopolitical and regulatory developments in order to anticipate their impact on the Group’s activities, including maritime transport, logistics, supply chain, energy, and international projects.

  • Draft internal memoranda, guidelines, and policies to ensure effective dissemination of economic sanctions compliance requirements throughout the Group.

Awareness & Internal Training

  • Develop and deliver training sessions on sanctions and export controls for commercial teams, operational teams, and international subsidiaries.

 

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR? 

 

  • Excellent knowledge of international sanctions regimes.

  • Strong command of export control regulations.

  • Solid experience in international economic law, sanctions geopolitics, and compliance.

  • Ability to analyze complex transactions and provide clear, practical, and business-oriented advice.

  • Strong legal rigor, excellent research and synthesis skills, analytical mindset, humility, and strong team spirit.

  • Excellent communication skills with internal stakeholders (commercial, operations, management) and external parties.

  • Experience in an international and multi-industry environment.

  • Fluency in English is essential; an additional language is a plus.

  • Master’s degree (LL.M. or equivalent) in law, compliance, or a related field.
