JOB SUMMARY

The Transit Fleet and Facilities Maintenance team provides safe, reliable, efficient, timely and cost-effective transit vehicle maintenance services to support federally regulated transit services within the City of Ottawa. 

You are responsible to perform manual work servicing buses, transit vehicles and related equipment, and may perform a variety of miscellaneous relief work within a variety of work units. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent.

Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in an automotive garage, or building or vehicle cleaning environment, or heavy vehicle/equipment operation. 

Previous experience driving large vehicles is an asset

Previous experience in automotive garage work is an asset

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service training certificate approved in Ontario (if performing wheel installation)
Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Must complete City training and obtain Ontario unrestricted CZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) within the timeframe determined by the employer, in order to operate a City of Ottawa bus

KNOWLEDGE

  • City policies and procedures affecting shop operations
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, tools, and equipment, procedures and processes used in the bus repair/servicing garages
  • Knowledge of and experience using cleaning tools, equipment and materials
  • Knowledge of and experience using hand and power tools and performing minor vehicle maintenance functions
  • Knowledge of wheel/tire maintenance 
  • Personal computers, with ability to use the Fleet Management Information System
  • Safe work practices and of safety issues in the workplace.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment ergonomic assessment is required
  • Able to work independently, with minimum supervision, and collaboratively with peers and managers as part of a team  
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Operate within a computerized Fleet Management Information System
  • Possess good organizational skills.
  • Able to organize, clean and maintain a safe work area
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, flexibility and adaptability
  • Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with fellow employees
  • Possess good attendance and work performance 
  • Able to follow all safety rules and regulations
  • Able to tolerate exposure to moderate amounts of noise, dust, grit, oil/grease, fumes and solvents  
  • Physically fit and able to perform the work and to work outdoors in various weather conditions   
  • Able to work a variety of scheduled shifts, on a 24 hour basis, including week-ends and nights, as per the Collective Agreement
  • Mechanical ability is desirable

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.  
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated  
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment ergonomic assessment is required    
  • Additional vacancies may occur during the competition process; Must be able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays at a variety of locations.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
