JOB SUMMARY

The Collections Operations Unit oversees City facilities and residential waste collection programs and services, including garbage, recycling, organics, yard and leaf waste, for the city's designated collection zone, which currently serves 70,000 homes.

You are responsible for providing supervision, coordinating the work activities of waste collection staff for the designated area, and ensuring appropriate resourcing of staff and equipment for each collection route/area.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12.

Minimum of five (5) years of recycling and refuse collection experience, including prior experience in a supervisory capacity.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • Waste collection and environmental waste practices and procedures
  • Standard corporate computer applications and systems, including databases and spreadsheets
  • Considerable knowledge of waste collection vehicles and equipment
  • Contract tendering documents, policies and procedures
  • Maps, drawings and collection routes and areas
  • Financial practices related to monitoring contract budgets
  • Computer programs, i.e. Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Dynamics, etc.
  • Must be familiar with applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures

  • Ability to work in a physical demanding environment, including the ability to lift up-to 75lbs
  • Ability to work flexible hours and overtime (as required)
  • Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, at different levels on complex, sensitive matters with an ability to bring conflicting points of view to consensus
  • Ability to analyze problems and work with a team to develop realistic and innovative solutions to problems involving resources, scheduling, technical and other difficulties
  • Proven client-centered attitude and approach to service delivery by acting on client feedback and taking personal responsibility for quality of service and on-going process improvement
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with the public on matters related to service delivery, complaints and City policies and procedures
  • Effective judgement and decision-making capabilities

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated  
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
