Job Summary

The Emergency Vehicle Technician I performs skilled maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of public safety emergency vehicles, including fire engines, ambulances, and specialized rescue equipment approximately 40% of the duty day. The remaining duty time is dedicated to performing preventive maintenance and minor to intermediate repairs on light to heavy duty vehicles as well as small equipment. This entry-level role ensures all vehicles meet safety and operational standards, adhering to manufacturer specifications, NFPA guidelines, and regulatory requirements. The EVT I is responsible for performing preventive maintenance and minor to intermediate repairs under the guidance of senior technicians and the Fleet Supervisor. This position supports mission-critical readiness and may assist with mobile field repairs and on-call service rotations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on fire apparatus, ambulances, and police vehicles following OEM, NFPA, and DOT standards.
  • Service and maintain pumps, foam systems, lighting, sirens, radios, air brake systems, and emergency lighting packages.
  • Complete preventative maintenance tasks including oil changes, brake service, fluid checks, and tire rotations.
  • Utilize diagnostic software and scan tools (e.g., Snap-On Modis, Cummins Insite, ProLink) to identify and resolve system faults.
  • Document maintenance and repairs in the City’s Fleet Management Information System (FMIS).
  • Assist in coordinating parts acquisition, service records, and vendor scheduling.
  • Operate welding, fabrication, and metalworking tools under supervision.
  • Support mobile repairs and field diagnostics as needed.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and well-organized shop workspaces.
  • Follow OSHA, EPA, and NFPA safety regulations and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Work Environment

The Emergency Vehicle Technician I works primarily in a fleet maintenance shop that includes both indoor and outdoor workspaces. The position involves frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, loud noise, fuel, hydraulic fluids, battery acid, smoke, and other potentially hazardous substances. Technicians must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols established by OSHA, NFPA, and the City of Fountain. Duties occasionally require working in inclement weather or responding to vehicle failures at off-site locations. The position demands manual dexterity, close visual acuity, and the ability to stand, kneel, crouch, and lift heavy equipment throughout the workday.


Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to these educational standards.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in automotive, truck, or emergency vehicle maintenance and repair is required.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification Level 1 required
  • Class B Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement required

Required to possess or obtain within 12 months of hire:

  • Colorado Diesel Emissions Inspector Certification
  • ICS-100 & ICS-700
  • Prior experience servicing fire apparatus or public safety vehicles preferred.
  • Training in diagnostic software and heavy equipment systems preferred.
  • Welding or fabrication coursework or certifications preferred

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, statistical and mathematical abilities and interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
  • This position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet. Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
  • This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time. Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds as needed and frequently lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.  
  • This position requires effective proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use. The ability to adequately type quickly with few to no errors is also very important. This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
