About this role

Join the City of Edmonton’s Urban Planning and Economy department to play a vital role in shaping the future of our central geographic area. As a Planning Technician II, you will be a technical bridge in the Land Development Application (LDA) process, translating complex planning concepts into clear, impactful visual data. This is an opportunity to use your advanced GIS skills to ensure that community partners and decision-makers have the accurate information they need to build a great city. Your work will directly influence future planning decisions and maintain public transparency through high-quality mapping and data stewardship.

In this role you will be responsible for advanced technical work related to Land Development Applications (LDA). This role focuses on creating complex maps, 3D renderings, and graphics for statutory plans and public notice materials like signs and postcards. You will also manage and maintain critical corporate GIS feature classes, including Zoning and Plans in Effect, ensuring they are accurate and accessible to community partners and internal teams. Your technical expertise will support informed recommendations presented to City Council for various planning reviews. You will face the challenge of managing multiple projects concurrently while meeting firm deadlines tied to City Council and Subdivision Authority meetings. Ultimately, you act as a key contributor to the integrity of the City's spatial data and the effectiveness of the public engagement process.

What will you do?

  • Create maps for proposed rezonings and statutory plan amendments, such as Area Structure Plans and Neighbourhood Structure Plans, using GIS software.
  • Produce high-quality graphics for Council reports, public notices, and engagement materials using ArcGIS Pro and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Develop 3D visualizations and conduct analytical studies, including shadow and viewshed studies, to support planning decisions.
  • Maintain and update department and corporate GIS feature classes, such as Zoning, Plans in Effect, and Servicing Agreements.
  • Perform complex spatial analysis using advanced geoprocessing tools to resolve issues identified by planners.
  • Create and revise Subdivision Condition of Approval maps to illustrate development requirements for the subdivision authority.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to new technicians regarding GIS workflows and POSSE processes.


  • Two-year diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban Planning, Engineering, or Architectural Technology from a recognized institute of technology.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible and directly related experience in land use planning and GIS.

Assets:

  • Experience using POSSE software.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software such as InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Experience with Trimble Sketch-up and ESRI 3D Extension

Skills required for success:

  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, including experience with geospatial processing tools and editing feature classes.
  • Strong working knowledge of graphic programs such as AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, and Google Applications.
  • Familiarity with planning principles and relevant legislation, including the Municipal Government Act and the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a variety of assignments under tight, inflexible deadlines.
  • Strong initiative and judgment to ensure work meets quality standards independently.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with advancements in GIS technology.
  • Effective collaboration skills for sharing knowledge and providing technical assistance within a team environment.

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
