In this role you will perform diverse and complex technical work within a municipal land use environment. You will specialize in advanced GIS applications to develop and maintain corporate feature classes and produce cartographic maps. Your work directly supports Land Development Applications, Subdivision Authority documents, and City Council Public Hearings. You will work with a high degree of independence, managing multiple projects with strict deadlines while ensuring a high level of accuracy. What will you do?

  • Create maps, graphics, and 3D renderings for inclusion in zoning applications, statutory plans, and Council presentation materials.
  • Create and revise "Subdivision Condition of Approval" maps to support Subdivision Authority decisions using GIS software.
  • Maintain and steward corporate GIS feature classes used in various city platforms and public-facing websites.
  • Conduct Geospatial analysis and research materials for planning projects, collaborating with Planners to meet information needs.

What will you do?

  • Maintain and steward corporate GIS feature classes used in various city platforms and public-facing websites.
  • Conduct Geospatial analysis and research materials for planning projects, collaborating with Planners to meet information needs.
  • Completion of a two-year diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban Planning, Engineering, or Architectural Technology from a recognized institute of technology.
  • A minimum of 2 years of directly related experience in land use planning and GIS.
  • Strong working knowledge of GIS and graphic programs such as ESRI ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, and Google Applications.

Assets:

  • A GIS or Planning Technician Diploma including coursework in geographic analysis and GIS.
  • Working knowledge of other Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Photoshop).

Skills required for success:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with engagement participants and internal teams.
  • Strong aptitude for critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative teamwork.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize a heavy workload within specific time constraints and short deadlines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of planning policies and procedures with the ability to apply them to technical assignments.

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
