About this role

4 temporary full-time position for 4 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in a landscape architectural technology, biological sciences, agriculture, life & environmental sciences, or equivalent post-secondary diploma or degree program, commencing in May 2026

Reporting into the Natural Areas and Ecology team, this position will complete field technical inspections of natural areas and their flora and fauna. The primary role will be to collect inventory data and complete surveys of the City’s natural areas.  You will succeed in this role if you enjoy working outdoors, are a quick learner, have excellent time management, organization and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Monitor and collect data for the City’s natural areas.
  • Conduct tree/plant surveys, weed surveys, soil assessments, trail assessments and wildlife surveys
  • Compile field notes, update spreadsheets and create maps
  • Use GPS and field maps to collect data
  • Assist with the development of efficient data sheets and programs for reporting survey results
  • Communicate results in verbal and written reports
  • Support the Wildlife Field Team and Natural Area Urban Foresters as required
  • Ensure that all regulations, policies and procedures are followed when doing field work
  • Help respond to 311 inquiries regarding natural areas
  • Other related duties as required


  • Currently enrolled in a landscape architectural technology, biological sciences, agriculture, life & environmental sciences, or equivalent post-secondary diploma or degree program

Assets:

  • Experience using Google Workspace applications or equivalent applications
  • Experience identifying plants and legislated weeds
  • Experience with plant and wildlife ecology
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C

  • Performing assigned tasks and duties outdoors in all weather and environmental conditions

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Salary: $19.623 - $21.586 (Hourly)
