About this role

The City of Edmonton operates seven municipal cemeteries—peaceful parkland settings featuring heritage monuments, commemorative markers, and vibrant year-round landscapes. Join our team and take pride in supporting one of the City’s most specialized and meaningful public services.

As a Labourer II, you will support interment services and the maintenance and beautification of premier parkland spaces, while providing exceptional customer service to ensure families experience a respectful, safe, and welcoming place to visit.

Your ability to work with minimal supervision in a changing, sensitive environment will contribute to the success of City service delivery and operational goals.

 

What will you do?

  • Interact with the public professionally and compassionately, supporting diverse cultural traditions and practices, including pallbearing
  • Locate and prepare grave sites (surveyed/unsurveyed), dig graves, build frames, mix concrete, and install monuments/headstones and foundations
  • Perform interments and disinterments, which may include safe removal and handling of human remains
  • Read surveyed grades, interpret site plans/blueprints, and accurately identify construction reference points
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on cemetery equipment, vehicles, and hand/power tools while following all OH&S and City safety protocols
  • Assist with general site maintenance, including snow removal, horticulture, turf care, landscaping, and beautification
  • Perform other related duties as required


  • Completion of Grade 10, High School Diploma is preferred
  • 1 year labour experience including maintenance, landscaping, concrete work, or groundskeeping duties, in cemeteries, parks or a similar work environment

Assets:

  • Previous customer service experience in a field operations setting
  • Knowledge of cemetery interment procedures and of various cultural/religious beliefs and traditions
  • Heavy Equipment Certificates/working knowledge (Skid Steer, Backhoe, Crane etc) 
  • Current Intermediate First Aid, CPR, and AED Certificates

Skills required for success:

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the public in a professional manner, especially in sensitive situations
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and vehicles within confined spaces
  • Physically able to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including manual labour and the use of simple hand/or power tools and light motor vehicles for long periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, organization, time management and prioritization skills required

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position

2 Permanent Full-time positions available 


Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. The primary schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 - 4:30 which includes a Saturday or Sunday rotation. Evening and weekend work will be required to support operational needs.


Salary: $25.935 - $34.208 (Hourly); $54,152.28 - $71,426.30 (Annually)
