Join our team this summer and help shape the way our city moves! We are looking for an energetic and detail-oriented Summer  Student to support our Traffic Signal and Street Light Operations. This is an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in urban infrastructure, from technical design to real-world asset management. You will work alongside a dedicated team of professionals committed to making Edmonton’s streets safer and more efficient. As a Summer Student in Traffic Signal and Street Light Operations, you will play a vital role in maintaining the heartbeat of Edmonton's transportation network. You will assist our technical teams in ensuring that traffic signals and lighting assets are designed, installed, and operated to the highest standards. This role offers a unique blend of office-based design work and exposure to field operations. Your contributions will directly impact the safety and livability of our streets for all community members. Throughout the summer, you will develop your technical skills and learn the complexities of municipal electrical layouts. You will be a key collaborator in ensuring our infrastructure integrates the latest technology for a modern city.

What will you do?

  • Assist with minor modifications and updates to traffic signals and street lighting assets to ensure peak performance
  • Help ensure all traffic signal and street lighting assets are installed and operate according to established safety and technical standards
  • Contribute to the delivery of projects that integrate the latest technology to support safe, efficient, and livable streets for all members of the public
  • Support the review & quality control of drafting and design for traffic signals and traffic control device civil/electrical layouts for projects, installations and/or construction
  • Complete inspections of signal and street lighting assets and collect and analyse traffic data
  • Investigate reports by the public and respond to inquiries relating to traffic signal and lighting systems
  • Participate in meetings with collaborators and other departments to discuss operations, maintenance, and project coordination
  • Work closely with technical staff to learn about the management of critical operations and maintenance programs


  • Applicants must currently be, or have been, enrolled in a Faculty of  civil, electrical, or computer engineering degree program at an accredited post-secondary institution 

     

Assets:

  • Experience with related computer software applications (e.g. Google Workspace Applications, AutoCAD, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Applications, Bluebeam)
  • Experience with project coordination and project management
  • Understanding of engineering drawings and technical documents

PLEASE NOTE:

  • There may be additional requirements and related costs depending on the team including: Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance.

Work Environment:

  • Position ​may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ​with ​the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

  • Monday - Friday
  • 40 hours per week 

Salary: $26.310 - $33.565 (Hourly); $54,935.28 - $70,083.72 (annually)
