About this role

Are you passionate about shaping the future of Edmonton’s urban landscape? The City of Edmonton is looking for a dedicated Planner to join our Urban Growth and Open Space team. In this role, you will help bridge the gap between land use planning and environmental stewardship, ensuring our city remains vibrant and sustainable. You will play a key part in implementing major strategies like Breathe: Edmonton’s Green Network Strategy to enhance our parks and open spaces. The Planner performs professional-level work focused on land use, active transportation, and environmental planning. You will be responsible for undertaking diverse projects that require deep analysis, the generation of innovative recommendations, and the development of proposed policies. Working under the guidance of a Senior Planner, you will research and guide the implementation of city-wide policies that impact our parks and recreation services. This role involves reviewing plans for new neighborhoods and ensuring land development applications align with our environmental goals for the North Saskatchewan River Valley and ravine system. You will also serve as a subject matter expert, responding to inquiries from community partners and the general public on sensitive or complex planning issues. Ultimately, your work ensures that city initiatives are backed by sound research and meaningful collaboration.

What will you do?

  • Research and develop policies and procedures for city-wide land use and open space planning
  • Review and participate in the creation of plans for new neighborhoods and statutory plan amendments
  • Analyze rezoning, subdivision, and land development applications throughout the city and river valley
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to promote best practices in environmental planning
  • Provide detailed research and customized responses to inquiries from leadership, media, and engagement participants
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for strategic policy development and interdisciplinary studies
  • Support public engagement plans and internal collaboration across various City departments
  • Implement key strategies, such as the Green Network Strategy, across multiple departments


  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Environmental Studies, or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively relevant and responsible experience in planning, policy development, and project management

Assets:

  • A Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, or a related discipline is preferred
  • Experience in municipal service delivery specifically for parks, recreation, or active transportation

Skills required for success:

  • Detailed knowledge of urban planning principles and environmental/open space practices
  • Strong understanding of the Municipal Government Act and other applicable legislation and regulations
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences
  • Exceptional time management skills with the ability to prioritize a large workload within short timeframes
  • Proven ability to build professional networks and maintain effective relationships with community partners
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including mapping, design applications, and statistical research methodologies

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

Salary Range: $51.611 - $65.218 (Hourly); $90,925.68 - $114,897.81 (Annually)
