About this role

The City of Edmonton is looking for dedicated leaders to join our Parks and Urban Forestry team. As a Licensed Crew Leader on the Tree Care Team, you will be at the forefront of preserving our city’s vibrant canopy, ensuring our urban forest remains a safe and beautiful asset for everyone. 

As a Licensed Crew Leader on the Tree Care Team, you will play a vital role in overseeing and coordinating daily tree maintenance operations. You will lead a diverse team of arborists and ground crew members, ensuring tasks are prioritized effectively and completed with the highest regard for safety and efficiency. Beyond daily operations, you will be a key player in hazard and storm response, guiding your team through complex and time-sensitive work. Your expertise as an ISA Certified Arborist will be essential as you implement industry best practices in pruning, removal, and risk assessment. You will also be responsible for fostering a positive team culture, mentoring staff, and upholding our commitment to high-quality service delivery.

What will you do?

  • Lead and supervise crews in the execution of the annual work plan, ensuring productivity and quality standards are met
  • Assign daily tasks with consideration for team capacity, equipment availability, and changing weather conditions
  • Conduct performance conversations, goal setting, and career planning for direct reports to support their professional growth
  • Oversee operational safety by conducting field inspections, delivering tool-box talks, and reviewing Emergency Response Plans
  • Participate in hiring and recruitment while managing the onboarding and training of new team members
  • Coordinate storm and hazard responses, including participating in on-call rotations to address emergency tree care needs
  • Manage equipment and tool inventories, liaising with Fleet Services to ensure all machinery is safe and well-maintained
  • Engage professionally with community members and collaborators to address inquiries and service notifications


  • A 2-year diploma in a related field (such as Urban Forestry or Arboriculture)
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an Arborist
  • At least 1 year of experience in a supervisory or leadership role, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Experience operating equipment ranging from small engines to heavy-duty aerial units and trailers
  • Standard First Aid

Assets

  • Previous experience in a municipal or large-scale public sector environment
  • Advanced leadership training or certifications
  • Experience using SAP and GIS for work tracking and notifications
  • Valid certifications in Tree Risk Qualification, Chainsaw, and Chipper training

Skills required for success

  • Expertise in industry best practices for tree care, hazard mitigation, and risk assessment
  • Strong organizational skills to manage service delivery and prioritize work plans in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and electronic communication skills for coordinating with staff and internal departments
  • Creative problem-solving abilities to resolve operational challenges and interpersonal conflicts
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and various computer applications for data entry and tracking

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to participate in an on-call rotation for storm call response
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions year-round
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with the ability to operate large trucks and trailers

Work Environment

  • This position involves significant outdoor work, often in extreme temperatures and various precipitation levels. The work is physically demanding and involves heights, noise, and the operation of heavy machinery. You will be provided with and required to use specialized safety gear, including head, eye, and hearing protection.
