About this role

Are you interested in facilitating good governance practices in a quasi-judicial environment? The Office of the City Clerk is looking for individuals with strong organization, analytical and time management skills to work in a legislative environment with competing demands.

The Assessment Review Board hears approximately 2000 assessment complaints annually, requiring completion within the same tax year.  The successful candidates will be working in a heavily regulated quasi-judicial environment with tight and demanding timelines.

What will you do?

  • Provide support for Board Members throughout the complaint process, including case management, policy, technical advice and facilitating the decision-making process, reviewing the decision for adequate reasons, clarity and compliance with legislation
  • Ensure relevant provincial legislation, City Bylaws, administrative and board policies, procedures and guidelines are complied with throughout the complaint process
  • Research, develop and make recommendations relating to the strategic planning of the Assessment Review Board including legislative changes, bylaws, policies and procedures, guidelines and administrative/board manuals
  • Attend Assessment Review Board hearings in-person and virtually
  • Assist the Assessment Review Board  management with planning, development and implementation of professional development programs


  • Current enrollment a post-secondary institution, in a law degree program
  • Experience using Google Workspace applications
  • Two years of progressive experience working with and interpreting legislation, research, business process and quantitative analysis
  • Experience with referencing or interpreting legislation

Assets:

  • Experience working in a quasi-judicial environment with tribunals
  • Experience working with decision-making teams and facilitating decision making
  • Coursework in administrative law

Skills required for success:

  • Working knowledge of administrative law and natural justice principles and practices
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with ability to set priorities
  • Confidence to work safely independently and with a team

Work Environment:

  • This position will be a combination of working from the office and on-site working conditions.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Up to 2 temporary full-time positions for 4 months intended specifically for students currently attending a law or related post-secondary degree program, commencing in May 2026

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary: $21.586 - $27.472 (Hourly)
