Job Summary
The Water Instrument Technician performs knowledgeable and experienced journeyman level skill in the new installation, repair, maintenance, programming, and calibration of instrumentation for water equipment and programmable logic controllers (PLC) for the Dallas Water Utility.
Job Description
Essential Functions
1 Performs and provides skilled journeyman technical skills to ensure consistent and accurate monitoring and controlling of water flow, water pressure, and water levels at pumping stations, pressure points, meter vaults, chemical analyzing pumps, and motors at various water and wastewater treatment plants.
2 Evaluates performance and reliability of electronic equipment by applying electronic theory, principles of electronic circuitry, testing and troubleshooting procedures, and related knowledge to install, build, test, troubleshoot, repair, program, calibrate and modify electronic equipment; performs preventative and predictive maintenance on plant equipment.
3 Repairs, replaces, and performs maintenance programming techniques for defective processors, main board, communications cards, analog or digital inputs and outputs, and various interfacing displays.
4 Troubleshoots, diagnose problems, repairs, and replaces electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic instrumentation and electronics to ensure operating accurately.
5 Provides regularly scheduled preventive maintenance of instruments such as inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, calibrating, and testing to ensure established standards are maintained.
6 Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates chemical analyzing devices to ensure accuracy of total and free chlorine residuals and ammonia readings, or contaminants in water delivery system; ensures the plant runs smoothly and that all sensors are adequately and appropriately calibrated to ensure the safest delivery of water to residents and customers.
7 Prepares, drafts, and completes various paperwork, maintains records and files of equipment, and documents repairs and maintenance work in management systems and software.
8 May train one to two apprentices by making daily work assignments, outlining procedures to follow, and inspecting completed work; prioritizes and supports project schedules, resources, and work plans established by supervisors and management.
9 Communicates with pumping operators, water instrument maintenance supervisor, and other skilled trade people to coordinate taking equipment out of service for repairs and maintenance.
10 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Thorough knowledge of electronic theory and practice involved in the installation, repair, replace, testing, troubleshooting, and programming of complex electronic circuitry.
2 Thorough knowledge of electricity, digital electronics, and repair of water instrumentation.
3 Basic knowledge of plumbing and water distribution instruments.
4 Working understanding of chemical analyzing equipment:.
5 Ability to diagnose and repair programmable logic controllers (PLC).
6 Ability to identify and differentiate color code for electrical and electronic components.
7 Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, drawings or blueprints, and specifications related to electronic equipment.
8 Ability to use mathematical formulas to calculate information.
9 Ability to work in a permit required confined space.
10 Ability to use hand and power tools, multi-meters, testers, pressure indicators, and tachometers.
11 Ability to train and educate other lower level technicians and inspect work.
12 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing
