Job Description
 

Overview

The Network Engineer engineers, designs, and maintains network switches, operating systems, routers, wireless devices, fiber infrastructure, and other systems supporting the various departments across the City of Dallas. Works closely with business analysts, IT architects, and IT managers to support and maintain networks and associated equipment.

Essential Functions

1 Designs, selects, tests, assembles, configures and standardizes the technology model for use in determining system hardware and software requirements; monitors needs for upgrades, new firmware, or other related changes; monitors health of the network and responds to alarms as needed.

2 Implements and migrates technology models across the organization; inspects technology integration to ensure effectiveness and operational efficiency; coordinates switch installations and various other configurations.

3 Performs business modeling and systems engineering; supports, troubleshoots, and configures networks, wireless access points, switches, circuits, and all other systems; assists customers and clients with business needs and engineering requests.

4 Provides communication and education to information systems personnel on the technology model; works with vendors ensuring scheduled work is completed and processed to meet customer requests.

5 Assists in defining business requirements to meet technology needs in providing a secured, robust, reliable and efficient infrastructure; monitors network health and provides on-call services when needed.

6 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

1 Knowledge of technology trends in order to support current and future enterprise opportunities.

2 Knowledge of business functions, application modeling, prototyping and migration planning.

3 Knowledge of network diagnostic, monitoring, and analysis tools

4 Knowledge of routing, switching, and other network activities.

5 Ability to administer and manage networks and systems with various facets.

6 Ability to analyze, design, install, and run network systems on large scale projects and for large departments.

7 Ability to troubleshoot networks, identify problems, and devise professional and functional solutions.

8 Ability to make sound decisions and situational analysis.

9 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing

10 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in an engineering, math, business, computer science or information technology related field.

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Two (2) years of experience in Cisco Network Engineering which includes expertise in MS Visio network architecture designs, implementing change management processes and providing troubleshooting expertise in support of the global network infrastructure.

 EQUIVALENCY(IES): 

  • High school or GED plus six (6) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

  • An associate degree in any field plus four (4) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in a non-specified field plus four (4) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

  • A Current Cisco certification, (CCNP, CCDP, CCIE) lab will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

LICENSE: 

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.

 OTHER REQUIREMENT(S):  

  • No FELONY or Class A misdemeanor convictions.
  • No Class B misdemeanor conviction within the last ten (10) years.
  • No family violence convictions
  • Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any felony, class A misdemeanor or class B misdemeanor charge
  • Availability for rotating on-call shifts including nights and weekends.



Salary Range

 

$70,075.20 - $87,609.60


 

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
